Captain America: Winter Soldier Trailer Review

Here is my review of the  Captain America: Winter Soldier trailer. Find thing I have to say is just wow, the movie is entirely different than I was expecting. Among the Marvel Phase 2 (post-Avengers) films The Winter Soldier was the one that I was dreading most because Captain America is the most difficult character to bright to screen in a post-WWII setting and since he is my favorite comic book character, I have the most concern that his movie will be screwed up. However, the movie might just be the best of Marvel's Phase 2 if the movie is as good as the trailer. First off, Cap's new uniform is awesome, a big improvement over his previous costume, especially since he is essentially a SHIELD Agent. The part about him always working with SHIELD is actually incredibly similar to the comics and the fact that he would rather work than try to adjust to the modern world is a key part of that. What I like most about the trailer is the social commentary about Cap's old fashioned American values of Freedom versus the new world controlling organization of SHIELD, which is a big factor of a majorly important event in the Marvel Universe. Another thing that I am happy to see is a lot of Black Widow/Natasha/Scar-Jo because I love the character and the actress and seeing more of her is never a bad thing. Hopefully she will be as great a character as she was in the Avengers. Robert Redford, as a senior leader within SHIELD as well as a member World Security Council, adds great legitimacy and gravitas to the cast since he is such a great and respected actor. Anthony Mackie, as Sam Wilson / Falcon, is the dude with wigs in the trailer and I am very happy about the casting choice since Mackie is one of the better actors around. In the comics Falcon was Cap's sidekick of sorts with the two even having their own comic series together for a time. Even though I did not notice this initially, since I know about the comics and know who the Winter Soldier is, the identity of the Winter Soldier is not clearly defined in the trailer. At no point does the trailer say who the Winter Soldier is, and make it clear for anyone who does not know. To clarify, he is the guy with the metal arm. Although I have already spoiled his identity in a post a couple of years ago, I will not spoiler it any further. If you do not already know, who do you think the Winter Soldier is? As a whole, the trailer makes the movie look like it will be awesome. The Winter Soldier also appears to be tonally and visually similar to the Avengers, which is great.

James: Steve's new uniform looks great and I like that humor is still present in the film.

James: While I do not normally care about an actor's hairstyle and such, I have to say that I do not like Scar-Jo's new hair in the movie compared to the Avengers. She does not look as attractive (she is still amazing though) with it that way; she looked so much better in the Avengers.

James: Real men don't need parachutes!

James: Are Cap and Widow discovering some secret base or something? Because why else would Cap be carrying his shield around.

James: Robert Redford in this movie reminds of Three Days of the Condor, which is probably fitting since it was also a political/spy thriller.

James: I love Scar-Jo and more of her is never a bad thing.

James: This is our first look at Mackie's Falcon.

James: This place looks like a Helicarrier factory and since the last Helicarrier was severely damaged Fury probably needs a few spares.

James: Fury looks to be in some trouble and the cause is shown in a later clip.

James: The Helicarrier factory's location looks a lot like SHIELD New York in the comics.

James: One of the best parts of the trailer: "Does anyone want to get out?"

James: However, the most awesome part of the trailer is probably Cap's shield flip, pure awesomeness.

James: The Winter Soldier's robotic left arm, which I am still not sure as to whether it looks cool or not. However, the costume as a whole looks a lot like the comics.

James: This is how Fury ended up in such a bad spot earlier in the trailer obviously.

James: Can you tell who that is yet? I know.

James: Falcon's costume and suit is a lot cooler than I had expected.

James: I really like the Winter Soldier's fighting style. Seeing him face off against Cap will be epic.

James: This shoot is one of the more interesting ones from the trailer since it is obviously showing Cap in his original WWII costume. Maybe later in the film he decides to wear it since he has no other options.

James: Another Helicarrier gets taken down.

James: The Winter Soldier appears to be an awesome villain, kind of like Boba Fett being a strong silent type guy.

Something else to note is that Agents of SHIELD did not have a new episode this week, therefore there will obviously be no review.

  1. I think it would be really cool to have Avenger crossovers. like fighting WWZ. The Avengers fighting a zombie outbreak. I want to see Aaron Paul as part of the Walking Dead cast playing Jesse.

    1. An Avengers vs. zombies would be cool. There is actually an official Marvel comic book series about what if all the heroes turned into zombies.

  2. I think it looked like a good trailer and I'm excited for the movie! :D It's going to be great seeing Black Widow again(though I agree about the hair- not the best look). Hopefully it will be an awesome film! :D
Oh, and I know who the Winter Soldier is! XD

    1. Yeah, I hope her hair looks better in the film than in the trailer and pictures, but other than that, I agree the trailer is great! :D

  3. I know who the Winter Soldier is, but if I didn't, I don't think I'd be able to figure it out. :P I agree that adding Black Widow in is gonna create only good things. She's awesome. I also like the guy who says "no, no he wasn't" (wearing a parachute) I think his character's name is Crossbones? I just watched the actor Frank Grillo in Warrior right before the trailer came out so that was cool when he showed up. :D

    1. I know, the trailer tells nothing about who the Winter Soldier is. I have heard some people think it is referring to Cap because he was frozen in ice.
Yes, I believe you are correct, that is Crossbones. I did not know he was in that, I probably need to watch it sometime.

  4. Captain America: First Avenger astonished me...it was the first and ONLY time I saw Chris Evans actually ACT! (Most of the time, he stands around looking pretty w/one expression: I put him on my Worst Actor List--no fan of his Johnny Storm). The trailer is very good, and I'm thrilled to see Black Widow again (and hope other characters like Hawkeye & Hulk show up in other films too). Holding all opinions until I see it.

    1. While I do agree Evens is best as Cap, I wouldn't say he is a terrible actor, on the other hand I have only seen as Johnny Storm, which he was decent considering the poor material, so I cannot say much about his other performances. A Hawkeye and Hulk cameo would be great, although unlikely.

  5. I think that this one has the most potential to be a classic out of all the Phase 2 movies (along with Guardians). From my understanding, The Winter Soldier is one of the better storylines in all of comics so I'm interesting to see it made into a movie.

I was a fan of the first movie, but ultimately it disappointed me ever so slightly. This however, looks phenomenal. Like you said, if we are in for something that is near as good as the trailer then we are in for a treat.

    1. 100% agree with you about this being a classic out of Phase 2. Yes it is and while it is not directly following the comic, it appears the conflict between the characters will be there, which is the core of the story's success.

  6. Oh darn, so far as the winter soldier is concerned, I spoiled it for myself by watching the avengers animated series while couch-bound. The outfit and hair look just the same...

    1. Yeah, I suppose you have spoiled. On a side note, that was a very good series though, and many of the stories were relatively close to the comics.

  7. I agree: Scarlett's hair was much better in the Avengers, but I still love her! And I didn't realize that it was Fury in the hospital...I thought it might've been Falcon. Oh! And I know who the Winter Soldier is!!! :D

Great review, James! I cannot WAIT to see this!

    1. I am mostly sure that is Fury, although he could be Falcon. That's good, just don't go looking it up. :)

      Thanks Clara!

  8. While I am not nearly as hyped about Winter Soldier, as Thor 2 (by the way its released in Aus today, just thought I'd point out :P) It looks like a movie worthy to have the name of Marvel. I have got to agree with you about Natasha's hair though, it doesn't look very nice.
Though I don't nor ever will read a Marvel comic I know who the Winter Soldier is too. I looked it up about a year and a half ago.
Oh yes! That was pretty much my favourtie part of the trailer as well! And Cap's new uniform looks much better than his WWII one.

    God Bless,
    Vellvin.

    1. Argu! You lucky Aussies! :P I can't wait to see Thor 2. Yeah, I don't know who thought Natasha's hair looking like that was a good idea.

  9. Okay, I assumed The Winter Solder was Rodgers....but now that I know it ISN'T him I am thinking he is Bucky. Because when I was watching Captain America for the second time I began to second guess Bucky's "death." And I read somewhere once that Rodgers has to face someone he knows in the new movie - or something like that. And Bucky was with those dudes and all their Hydra stuff. So they could have stuck something in him which would have kept him alive when he fell. And he could have iced over like Rodgers and been found later. So I'm going with Bucky. Which will be kind of sad, because he's bad and I've always liked Bucky. He was cool with Rodgers.

I don't like Black Widows new hair either. The Avengers was the best style.

Rodgers shield flip. Coolest thing ever!

I really want to see this movie, even more than Thor. It looks like it is going to be amazing.

  10. The first minute or so of the trailer didn't really have me impressed first watch, then BAM! Instant action packed awesome movie! I cannot wait! My dad watched the trailer too (a huge marvel fan who's usually my walking wikipedia for comic book info since I usually only read MC2 stuff) and thought it was awesome. I know who the Winter Soldier is-I was told and I also watched Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and I have to say the costume really follows what it looked like in the cartoon. I'm mostly just looking forward to Thor 2: The Dark World (two more days, yahoo!) but give me time and some new trailers for Cap 2, and I'll be looking forward to it more, seeing as how Black Widow is one of my favorite Superheroes.
    Great Review, James!
