Top 100 Movies: Part 1: 100-91.

Just about everyone has a favorite movie and in the following weeks I will be ranking my Top 100 Favorites of All-Time. It is important to emphasize that these are my "Favorite" films, not "Best" even if I use the word "Best" sometimes. Some of the movies are not universally liked and a few even hated by some, but overall few of the films on my list rate below a 70% on the Rotten Tomatoes Meter and only two rate as Rotten on their ratings. There are genres like Horror, Romance and Musicals, which I do not enjoy and therefore have few movies from those genres on my list. . Also there are many famous and popular films that I have yet to see, including The Godfather, Pulp Fiction and Aliens. Another important note is that I love Comic Book films, they are my favorite genre and many of them rank among my Top 25 Favorites, there are few who share my view of Comic Book movies but I truly enjoy them that much. My absolute favorites are the movies that I can watch a thousand and never get tried of watching them, those are the ones that stick with you throughout the years. My list is in a constant state of flux with new films added every month and I will try to update the list as my favorite films enviably change. After my list is posted I will post my video tribute as well. In the words of the Joker "And here we go!"

At Number 100: The African Queen
African Queen, is a pure fun adventure staring two of the greatest actors of all-time Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. John Huston's use of location shooting in African was revolutionary at the time and paved the way for more movies to be filmed on location and set a new standard in the adventure genre.

At Number 99: Dances With Wolves

Even though Dances With Wolves won the Oscar for Best Picture, there were many who believed it was undeserving of the award, however, it is one of my favorite Oscar winning movies. James Cameron's Avatar basically stole Dances with Wolves story except with Costner's version it is executed so much better.

At Number 98: Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Featuring one of the best comedic duos since Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis, Steve Martin and John Candy, are at their best in Planes, Trains and Automobiles. The film wraps a hilarious road-trip comedy with surprising deep friendship themes, but it is the unforgettable humor that makes this a classic. It even features a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo by Kevin Bacon!

At Number 97: The Bourne Supremacy
The Bourne Supremacy is the second installment in the popular Bourne trilogy that continues the story of Jason Bourne and his journey for answers. While the Supremacy does not quite match the brilliance of the other two Bourne movies, The Bourne Supremacy offers some solid thrills and action scenes throughout.

At Number 96: Groundhog Day
What a completely original idea for a comedy plot, reliving the same day over and over until he gets everything right. Groundhog Day is one of the funniest and best written comedies ever made and a definite classic in the genre.

At Number 95: The Other Guys
One of the lesser know films on my list, The Other Guys is an absurdly hilarious buddy cop packed with unforgettable quotes. There is no comedy that I quote more often than The Other Guys. While it is not necessarily a great "Film", comedies are much more subjective than other genres of film. It really depends on the viewer's sense of humor more than anything else and The Other Guys was my kind of comedy! But warning this is definitely not intended for the younger audience.

At Number 94: Planet of the Apes
Planet of the Apes' is probably the best pre-Star Wars sci-fi movie and it still holds up surprisingly well. The make-up effects for the Apes were revolutionary at the time, yet look great even today. Combine that with an original story and one of the best twist ending ever, you have a science fiction classic.

At Number 93: From Russia With Love
The James Bond franchise has always been one of my favorites since I was a kid, despite many of the movies being mediocre. Sean Connery's second outing as the iconic James Bond is much more complex and than his previous film, Dr. No, and has the first appearance of Q. From Russia with Love is more of an espionage thriller and is more grounded in reality than the later installments and remains one of the best of the series.

At Number 92: Gettysburg
One of the longest films on this list, Gettysburg is an excellent telling of the bloodiest battle in American history and one of the Nation's darkest hours. Originally set to be release as a TV mini-series this over four hour long epic was edited into a theatrical released film and flopped at the box office. Gettysburg is not for those with a short attention span but will satisfy any history buff like myself with its historical accuracy.

At Number 91: Tron: Legacy
Another movie choice that some might not like, but Tron: Legacy really surprised me by creating a unique mythos even if you have not seen the original, which I have not. Undoubtedly one of the best visual spectacles you will even see and some great action scenes. A must watch for any computer savvy, tech geeks like myself. Even if you did not enjoy the narrative, at least it is the most awesome Daft Punk music video ever!

Note: Thanks to everyone who participated in yesterday's "Name My Top 10 Movies" post, it was a rather ridiculous idea that I probably shouldn't have posted.

Warning: Some films on my list are rated "R" and not recommend for younger audiences.

  2. I'm a peacock Alan! You gotta let me fly!

Also, glad to see Tron Legacy on this list. Between the 3D visuals, story, and soundtrack, I truly believe it is one of the most underrated movies in the last few years. AND it's got Olivia Wilde!

  3. I haven't seen 100,98,93, or 92, but I agree with you on the ones I HAVE seen :).
I'm also intrigued by Gettysburg. I LOVE history, and I actually did a research paper on that battle a few years ago.

  4. Hey, I've seen the African Queen, that was actually a pretty good movie. :)

I've also see Tron; Legacy, I love that film's soundtrack a lot. :)

Haven't seen the others, also haven't seen the Godfather trilogy either but would like to if it is any good. Be sure to review it if and when you do watch it!

  8. This is looking good. If a film like Gettysburg is only at 92, The next 70 will be a hall of fame, and then you get to the ones on your header... :)

  9. @David Washington: Thank you.

@Jordan: Hahaha! One of the many hilarious quotes from the movie!

Glad we agree on this, can't wait for the sequel. It was probably the first Olivia Wilde will I watched and I've been a fan (or stalker) ever since.

    @Alana: Thanks. :)
If you enjoy history I would highly recommend it and it is one of the most historically accurate. Just me ready for a four hour film.

@Jamie: Yep, one of Bogart's many great films. :)

One of my favorite soundtracks as well.

I will definitely review those when I watch them!

@Max Tron: In my opinion, there is not a lot of bad content in it. Tron: Legact is rated PG and only has very mild swearing and violence. If you have seen the Star Wars prequel trilogy, it is about as clean.

@Buddy2Blogger: You would probably enjoy those films, especially if you like long epics and absurd bubby cop movies.

@Daniel: Thanks, more will be posted next week!

@JT: Thanks! :) I was even surprised by some that didn't make the list, because I have seen so many great movies.
