Top 100 Movies: Part 3: 80-71.

Here are more movies from my Top 100 List! Tomorrow I will post a the recent Man of Steel trailer review and a "Name That Soundtrack" post on Saturday.

At Number 80: Jaws
Who can argue that Jaws shouldn't make this list? It is a film everyone should see at least once, even though I do not hold it quite as highly as others might, it is a true classic. The problem is that it loses the suspense upon multiple viewings. Despite that, Steven Spielberg's direction is amazing, creating "The Jaws Effect" and forever changing how suspense/horror films are made.

At Number 79: The Princess Bride
Despite the name, The Princess Bride was not a "chick flick" as I expected. Actually I found it "inconvincible!" how hilarious and clever the film was. Rarely does the film ever become too silly and ridiculous, despite how intentionally cheesy some of the effects and other aspects of the film are. As many have said before, The Princess Bride is one of the more quotable films ever made, because there is so much great dialogue throughout.

At Number 78: Rango
Rango was a surprisingly funny animated film that is among the best animation has to offer and a great satire of classic western films combined with its own unique spin. Even the Academy agreed Rango was excellent giving it an Oscar for Best Animated Feature that finally unseated Pixar's four year reign of the category.

At Number 77: Ben-Hur
Despite a painfully slow first hour, Ben-Hur's next three hours easily make up for slow start. From the incredible chariot race to seamlessly tying Christ's resurrection into the film's plot, Ben-Hur truly is an epic in every sense of the word. Also Ben-Hur won the Oscar for Best Picture.

At Number 76: Star Trek: First Contact
Although I am not much of a Star Trek fan, Star Trek: First Contact is currently my favorite Star Trek movie, even after watching The Wrath of Khan. Boasting an impressive 92%  on the Rotten Tomatoes meter, it is very underrated when compared to other sci-fi films. It has the best action of the Next Generation series, and the Borg are the best Star Trek enemy, hopefully J.J. Abrams' movie series will eventually use them in his reboot.

At Number 75: Patton
Patton, based on the true story of General George S. Patton, and won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1977. George C. Scott gives a career defining and Oscar winning performance as the great General, which he no doubt deserved. Definitely one of the best biopics ever made and it actually made the subject matter entertaining were other such films often fail.

At Number 74: Jurassic Park
Jurassic Park changed films forever with its revolutionary CGI effects, yet it never let the effects become the star of the movie. Steven Spielberg's direction is top notch, no one else could have done what he did and make it work so well. Jurassic Park is exactly what it needs to be, a fun, thrilling summer Block Buster packed with stunning visual effects.

At Number 73: The Big Sleep
Although the film's is overly complex and does not make complete sense in the end, it is the snappy dialogue and banter that really makes The Big Sleep timeless. Bogart's and Bacall's on screen chemistry is nearly unmatched in the film. They just do not make mystery/detective films like they use to anymore, it is a real shame.

At Number 72: The Searchers
Often considered the "Best Western of All-Time", The Searchers is a fantastic film, just not quite the best. John Wayne plays a darker and more complex character than most of his other roles, which is a good change for him. John Ford is at his directorial best in The Searchers with some brilliant cinematography and fun action scenes.

At Number 71: The Magnificent Seven
The Magnificent Seven is one of the best action western ever made. The movie was adapted from the Japanese film "Seven Samurai", which you will see later on this list, and has been copied many times in various genres but none do it better than The Magnificent Seven.

  1. Great list! :D I agree, a lot of these films are really good! :) I also loved The Princess Bride(I agree, that movie is hilarious!), and Jurassic Park. I haven't seen the other films on the list yet, but I'll have to at some point since they look good :)

  2. I have seen all but The Big Sleep, Jurrasic Park, Star Trek, and Jaws.

I liked Rango; the Princess Bride had some cheesy, silly moments that were almost too much for me but it turned out pretty good by the end. "INCONCIEVABLE" was hilarious.

Ben-Hur; long time favorite. You wouldn't believe how much I crushed on Masala and I completely credit that oddity to his black hair (I always prefer guys with black hair and I don't know why all the villians usually have black hair, it's not fair! I don't want to be attracted to the bad guys! *sob*)

    Patton is a good one!!

I don't understand why people think THe Searchers is one of the best westerns ever; it was okay but I didn't like most of it and neither did the rest of my family.

I did really enjoy the Magnificent Seven, though. I only got to see it once thought, I should watch it again. I should also rewatch the Seven Samurai again.

  4. LOVE The Princess Bride. I'm actually surprised that Jaws and Jurassic aren't further up, but glad that they are there. The sight Ben-Hur makes me feel nauseous, but that's because I had to read that terrible book in middle-school...painful.

    Best,

    Alexandra~

  5. I can't say that I agree with you on Jurassic Park. I tried to watch it but I just got bored. I left after it had been going for an hour, I think.
Apparently afterwards my Mum and older siblings didn't think it was that great! Just stating my opinion.
I remember that I thought when I was littler that Ben Hur went on for hours!
The Princess Bride: one of the bestest movies EVER made. You can't take the word inconceivable seriously ever again. And yes, it is not a chick flick because it has more potential than ANY chick flick. Plus, the fact that I've had it my whole life and I have watched it many many times. :) Also, like you said it is very very quotable. ;)

    God Bless,
    Vellvin.

  8. @Shena Tokala: Thanks! :D I definitely recommend any of these. :)

@Jamie: You would probably enjoy The Big Sleep since you like old time detective stories.

I can see why you didn't like, there is a lot of silly humor. :)

On the bright side Tom Hiddleston is a very cool dude in real life, basically the opposite of his character in that respect. :) I have a crush on Harley Quinn and Catwoman so I can relate to being attracted to bad people in movies.

I can also see why you didn't like it so much, I did not love it at first but after thinking about it I liked it more.

Yes you should, they were great! Also thanks for recommending Seven Samurai, I loved it.

@Alana: Thanks, it is fantastic. :)

@Alexandra Lanc: Something I haven't said before is that this list is a combination of mine and my brother opinion and he does not like Jaws quite as much as I do, but we agree on everything else. As for Jurassic Park, I haven't seen it in a while but I just watched the second Jurassic Park yesterday and plan to re-watch the first one soon, so I will probably update the list with Jurassic Park higher. I have not read the book so I would not know about that, thanks for commenting!

@Vellvin: I understand why you did not like that much, it is one of those films that you either have to watch when you are a kid (like I did) or watch it when it was first released to enjoy it most.
Well, it kind of did! :)
Completely agree, I can't stop laughing when anyone says that and Marriage.

@Daniel: You would be correct, westerns are some of my favorites!

@David Washington: After I watch it again it will probably be higher on the list. Thanks commenting.
