The Three Musketeers Review.

Thoughts: I did not have high expectations for The Three Musketeers but it was not as bad as I expected it to be. It was entertaining if you do not take too seriously. It opened with an almost Mission Impossible like spy mission but it was more like a parody of it than trying to make something serious. There was also a lot of cheesy dialogue. The flying air ships (watch the trailer) were way too far fetched and it should have kept it more more realistic by not having those in the movie. Orlando Bloom really over played his role, his performance was definitely his worst performance and he played his character like a cartoon. Also the actor (Logan Lerman) who played the classic character D'Artagnan was awful! Why was he casted as the star of the movie? The Three Musketeers did have some things I liked, the swordfight near the beginning was very good and some of the movie was funny. It should have had more of the cool swordfighting and less other stuff it could been.

Directed by: Paul W. S. Anderson
Genre: Action Adventure,
Release Date: 21 October 2011 (2011-10-21)
Running Time: 110 minutes
MMPA rating: PG-13

The Good: A few very good action scenes,

The Bad: Tons of cheesy/corny dialogue, Bad acting, The air ships were ridiculous,

Plot: The following plot summery is copied from Wikipedia.com.
In Venice at the beginning of the 17th Century, the Three Musketeers, Athos (Matthew Macfadyen), Porthos (Ray Stevenson), and Aramis (Luke Evans), with the help of Athos' longtime lover, Milady de Winter (Milla Jovovich), steal airship blueprints made by Leonardo da Vinci. However, they are betrayed by Milady, who gives the blueprints to the Duke of Buckingham (Orlando Bloom). Upon returning to France, the Musketeers are forced to disband by Cardinal Richelieu (Christoph Waltz) for their failure, and they end up on the streets of Paris.
One year later, a young man named D'Artagnan (Logan Lerman) leaves the village of Gascony for Paris in hopes of becoming a Musketeer as his father was, only to learn that they no longer exist. At a rural bar, D'Artagnan takes offense to Captain Rochefort (Mads Mikkelsen), the leader of Richelieu's guard, and challenges him to a duel, but Rochefort wounds him slightly while he is distracted. Arriving in Paris, D'Artagnan by coincidence separately encounters Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. Looking for revenge, D'Artagnan offends each for petty reasons, and schedules duels with each, the next day but one hour apart.
Athos brings Porthos and Aramis to the duel as his seconds, and D'Artagnan realizes they are the Musketeers he is seeking. He is prepared to continue with the duel, but Richelieu's guards break it up. The four fight together and defeat the soldiers, but later are summoned before the young King Louis XIII (Freddie Fox) and his wife, Queen Anne (Juno Temple). Richelieu asks the king to execute the four, but he and the queen are too impressed by their bravery and congratulate them instead, to Richelieu's anger. Watch the movie to what happened next.

Plot: 5.8/10- The plot was ridiculous and the characters were not developed but it did deliver some fun action adventure.

Action: 7.5/10- The first swordfight was very entertaining and there was some other action scenes.

Acting: 4.5/10- Orlando Bloom was surprising bad and Logan Lerman (D'Artagnan) was also awful but Luke Evans and Milla Jovovich were good in their roles.

Special effects: 6.0/10- Some of the special effects were almost believable yet others were bad.

Soundtrack: 7.0/10- The soundtrack fit well with the theme of the movie.

Comedy: 7.8/10- Some of the humor was funny and some fell flat.

Would I Watch This Again: No, I will not.

Overall: 6.0/10- While this is the worst of The Three Musketeers movies it not a terrible movie.

Closing comments: If you do not take The Three Musketeers to seriously it can be some what enjoyable but if you hated it I would not disagree.

  1. I saw that movie and just ugh.
Throughout the entire thing, I was like "Okay, this movie must be pretty freaking long because the plot hasn't really picked up yet and it's already an hour in." Then all of a sudden the movie was over.
The plot was so weak, until i just read your summary I forgot what it was about.
Cheesy dialogue, stupid humor, and the air ships were the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.

  2. Wow. I've been wanting to see a Three Musketeer movie cause Jamie read a version of the book to me, but I guess we won't watch this one to start on. Thanks for reviewing it. :P

  3. Of course, I never saw this film, but just based on the trailer, I would score it a -15 if I could. I have read the book several times. Done right, the film's supposed to be an espionage suspense kind of thing, definately not an action movie.

  4. @Savannah Jean: I almost forgot about the movie in less than 2-day.

@Kayla: I think the 70s version was the best of the movies but I have not seen it.

@JT/King Valun: A espionage suspense would be an excellent direction for the movie.
