The Avengers Review.

Thoughts: Was The Avengers worth the five year wait? Did Joss Whedon really pull off the near impossible task of bringing together Earth's Mightiest Heroes into one amazing movie? And the answer is YES! The Avengers was better than the hype, it had heart and the best action of all time in a movie. Not only did The Avengers exceed expectations, it is the best comic book movie and one of the best action movies ever made. The acting, dialogue, humor and much more was all done perfectly. Also this is a spoiler free review. The amount of screen time between the characters was mostly equal except Tony Stark/Iron Man had slightly more dialogue than the other characters but the time on screen of each character was about the same. The chemistry between the characters was great and you could see how some of the characters clicked really well. Also the pacing was spot on perfect, the character moments and plot progression was balanced well with the most amazing action ever filmed. The Avengers had some memorable funny moments and quotes in recent memory. But the humor was not cheap and just made the movie even better. Despite some of the light hearted humor, there was a very somber part that really made an impact of loss. The movie is made so that if you no previous knowledge you should be able to easily follow the plot, but for fans like me, who have waited years for The Avengers there are plenty of references that enhance the experience. Although every character had their moment in the spot light, Black Widow benefited the most from Joss Whedon's direction. She was given a brief back story that made her a better character but did not distract from the movie. Re-casting Mark Ruffalo as the role of Bruce Banner, and not bring Edward Norton back to reprise his role actually turned out for the better since Ruffalo was an amazing Bruce Banner with hilarious dry humor. The CGI effects for the Hulk were finally the most believable version of the Hulk on film and the highest quality CGI character in film. It left you wanting to see more Hulk. I did see The Avengers in IMAX 3D, this was my first of the new 3D movies I have seen. While the 3D was cool, it really did not make the movie better or worse but I do recommend watching it in 3D because the action was great. I will write a post in the future specifically about the 3D. From a nerd perspective, it satisfied on every level. It was dreams come true, that I have always wanted even before the Iron Man movie. The way the team worked together was perfect; each Avenger had their own job during the epic battle. The movie made you believe that a team of Earth's Mightiest Heroes could exist with conflict between the characters. The costumes for each character work together very well and did not seem out of place. The screen stills of Captain America's costume do not give it justice it worked very well in the movie. Although you would think that Black Widow and Hawkeye would be under powered compared to the other Avengers, they were great and completely believable. Especially Black Widow, who really kicked butt in the movie and was a crucial part of the movie, I am voting for a Black Widow to be made. The action is beyond amazing! It leaves you in awe. Everything action scene is perfectly choreographed and visually stunning. The Avengers sets the bar high for action movies to come (more on the action below). Every actor’s performance was excellent! Tom Hiddleston was again great as Loki. He is a very compelling and multi dimensional villain and he is the best villain since Darth Vader. From beginning to end The Avengers had non-stop excitement and is one of the most entertaining movies ever made. I really did not think it was possible for an Avengers movie to work or be better than any of the other Comic Book movies but Joss Whedon and company really did the near impossible task and made it even better than the hype. The Avengers is a "Marvelous" (no pun intended) experience that you must see to believe.

Plot: The following plot summery is copied from Wikipedia.com.
After his fall from Asgard into space, the Asgardian Loki meets the Other, the leader of a warmongering alien race known as the Chitauri. In exchange for retrieving the Tesseract,2 a powerful energy source of unknown potential, the Other promises Loki a Chitauri army with which he can subjugate the Earth. Nick Fury, director of the espionage agency S.H.I.E.L.D., arrives at a remote research facility during an evacuation. Physicist Dr. Erik Selvig is leading a research team experimenting on the Tesseract, and Agent Maria Hill explains that the object has begun radiating an unusual form of energy. The Tesseract suddenly activates and opens a portal, allowing Loki to reach Earth. Loki takes the Tesseract and uses his staff to enslave Selvig and several agents, including Clint Barton, to aid him in his getaway.
In response to the attack, Fury reactivates the "Avengers Initiative". Agent Natasha Romanoff is sent to India to recruit Dr. Bruce Banner; agent Phil Coulson visits Tony Stark to have him review Selvig's research; and Fury approaches Steve Rogers with an assignment to retrieve the Tesseract. While Barton steals iridium needed to stabilize the Tesseract's power, Loki causes a distraction in Stuttgart, Germany, leading to a confrontation with Rogers, Stark, and Romanoff that ends with Loki's surrender. While being escorted back to S.H.I.E.L.D., Thor, Loki's adoptive brother, arrives and frees Loki hoping to convince him to abandon his plan and return him to Asgard. After a confrontation with Stark and Rogers, Thor agrees to take Loki to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s flying aircraft carrier, the Helicarrier, and imprison him until the Tesseract can be acquired. Watch the movie to see what happens next.

Plot: 10/10- The Avengers' plot is perfectly paced and superbly written. It introduces each character into the movie without feeling forced. There were no plot holes, with every character having a chance to shine.

Action: 10/10- Wow! Just wow! The action in The Avengers is by far the best action ever filmed. With stunning choreographed battle scenes and all of it well lit. You could clearly see what was happening during all of the scenes. Seeing Iron Man vs. Thor, and Thor vs. Hulk was truly amazing and very satisfying. Every character had great action scenes throughout the movie, each using their particle skill set to help the team in the battle. Also The Avengers combined powers worked excellently together for one of the most unique battles ever.

Acting: 10/10- This is possibly the best cast ever assembled. Bringing together most of the actors from the previous movies into The Avengers it fully succeeded in balancing the cast and putting egos aside. The chemistry between the characters was great and they played off each other. I will write a more in depth analysis in a future post.

Special effects: 10/10- The CGI looked so realistic that you could almost believe that it was real. Hulk looked "Incredible" (no pun intended)! He is the most realistic CGI character ever created. During battle scenes he actually looked like he was really there in the fight. The 3D worked very well but it doesn't really change my overall opinion of the movie for better or for worse.

Soundtrack: 10/10- Alan Silvestri's soundtrack matched the epicness of the movie flawlessly. Using notes from each of the heroes previous movies during their scenes. This is one of my all time favorite soundtracks.

Comedy: 9.5/10- The amount and timing of the humor was again perfect, with it adding to the movie without feeling cheap. There are so many quotable lines and hilarious moments and dialogue.

Would I Watch This Again: Oh yeah! I am buying this on Blu-Ray/DVD and going to be watching over and over again. I doubt I will ever get tired of it.

Overall: 10/10- This is the first time I have given a movie a 10/10 since Star Wars and Lord of the Rings and it without a doubt deserves it. The Avengers was everything I could have wanted and more! It not only exceeds expectations, it "SMASHED!" them like the Hulk. It was worth every penny to see it in the theaters. The Avengers is one of those movies that turns out far better than you ever could have hoped for. It will always be known as one of the great movie classics like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and Indiana Jones.

Additional Comments: The Avengers is a must see movie that you need to experience in the theaters and if you did not like it, you do not know what entertainment is. You will still enjoy even if you have not seen the other movie related to The Avengers.

Closing comments: It is hard to believe that Joss Whedon actually did it. He made the perfect Comic Book movie.

  5. Good review! I'm glad that you liked the film, and finally got to see it.

I've seen it a few times, and I have to say that the 3D was better than the 2D. I didn't think it would be, but after seeing both, the 3D really added depth.

I have to agree on the comedy. It had a perfect blend, though my favorite quote was Cap saying "There's only one God, ma'am, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't dress like that."

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

    Best,

    Alexandra~
