Top 10 Movie Villains: Part 2

My Top 10 Movie Villains list continues with several more entries in the list! If you missed it, you can check out the first part of the list by clicking here.

7: Agent Smith
Quote: "You hear that Mr. Anderson?... That is the sound of inevitability... It is the sound of your death... Goodbye, Mr. Anderson..."
Played by the always entertaining Hugo Weaving, Agent Smith from the Matrix is a truly menacing antagonist. Seemingly unkillable at first, Agent Smith is the perfect opposing force against Neo and the others. He serves to challenge the hero and force him to overcome, and that is exactly what a great villain needs to be. Despite the Matrix sequels being, well, rather disappointing to say the least, Weaving as Smith continued to be an entertaining antagonist to watch.

6: T-1000 (T2: Judgement Day)
Quote: "Just need to ask him a few questions."
For me, it was a real tossup between the T-800 in the first film and the T-1000. Part of me wants to give it to the T-800, but my opinion is bias due to the T-800 being such a great hero in the second film, so I gave it to the T-1000. Regardless, the T-1000 is a revolutionary antagonist for the special effects industry, just like the next villain. While he is more of a force of destruction rather than a fleshed out character, he is a perfect example of how to make the antagonist such an unstoppable force that the heroes must struggle to defeat him.

5:  Gollum/Sméagol (LOTR)
Quote: "We wants it, we needs it, must have the precious"
Whether or not Gollum/Sméagol is a true villain might be debatable, but to me, he is one of the most complex and intriguing ones in film. He is a tragic villain, who is not entirely in control of his own actions due to the One Ring's overwhelming power. Andy Serkis' motion capture performance revolutionized filmmaking by proving that motion capture is a valid form of acting, and he continues to deliver groundbreaking performances in his current films.

4: Magneto
Quote: "Does it ever wake you in the middle of the night? The feeling that one day they will pass that foolish law or one just like it, and come for you? And your children?"
Whether you include Ian McKellen or Michael Fassbender's role as the character, Magneto is a timeless villain. Magneto should be ranked above the character that next on the list (which you will see in the next post) because he is a far more complex and well developed character, but due to Magneto being more of an anti-hero, especially in the last two films, he is ranked at number four. With that out of the way, Magneto is an intriguing antagonist due to his motives not always being straightforward. You never know what his true intentions are until his plan unfolds, and yet his ultimate goals are not always wrong, but rather he is going about them in the wrong way.

What do you think of my list thus far? Please comment below and check back next week for the final part of the list.

  1. Interesting list! I agree that Magneto turned more 'anti-hero' in the last two films (especially in First Class, and even the older Magneto had his almost heroic moments in Days of Future Past). Can't wait to find out who's your number 1 villain!

    1. Thanks! True, he was heroic in DOFS, although he was fairly villainous in X1 and X2.

  2. Great continuation of the list! :) I like all of the villains that I know from this list; Smeagol is a very complex character and Andy Serkis does an amazing job with him! :) Looking forward to seeing the rest of the list! :)

  3. Don't see Gollum as a villain and Magneto is not an out and out baddie either. Interesting choices though. Presumably Darth will make the top 3! Some from older films would be good too. How about Robert Mitchum in Night of the Hunter? DeNiro's Max Cady from Cape Fear? How about a follow up post on the 10 worst movie villains?

    1. Well yeah, those characters could go either way. And yes, Death is going to be in the Top 3. I have not actually seen any of films you mentioned though. Interesting idea for a list, although, aside from terrible Bond villains, there are not many terrible villains that people usually remember, but still, good idea.

    1. I saw that he was on several other lists, and since he is technically an antagonist, I decided he would be included. And thanks!

  6. I would place Agent Smith in a stronger place. He is such a huge part of the Matrix.

    1. I debated whether or not to place him higher than the T-1000, but since the Matrix sequels sucked, I decided he would be lower.

  7. I never really saw Smeagol as a villain actually lol,...Gollum was, I suppose. XD

  8. I'm hoping that the lack of the Joker (Ledger) is because you are saving a nice and cozy place for him at numero uno.
