Wow, this looks like a phenomenal film! Pawn Sacrifice is based on the life of Chess Master Bobby Fischer and how he was not only one of the best chess players in the world, but also a spy for the American Government.
Tobey Maguire stars in the film as Bobby Fischer, and while some people dislike him, I have always liked the guy, and this looks like a comeback role for him. Maguire might not exactly look like his real life counterpart (picture below), but his performance appears to be exceptional, and potentially Oscar worthy if the film is marketed right.
Hopefully, the film will utilize the onscreen visuals to portray the way he perceives chess, since that style works so well on BBC's Sherlock. One other thing that I am pleased by is that it is rated PG-13, whereas many similar films go for the unnecessary R rating, even though it is rarely required to tell the story.
Mixing a descent in madness, the chess matches, and spy thriller elements, Pawn Sacrifice is a film that I am now excited for. Considering that the early reviews are generally positive, it does not appear to be a disappointment.

This looks really good!!! I had know I idea this guy even existed. But...I'm not a chess player. I can only see the first move...no further. XD
ReplyDeleteSo excited to see Tobey Maguire in this! I can't say I've ever seen him in a movie and disliked his performance.

This movie would be amazing! This is the greatest script about chess ever written. Ever. And I don't even really care about chess. Chess doesn't play well on screen. But this will.
