5 Surprises of 2015

2015 is coming to an end! And to end the year, let's take a look back at a few of the surprises from the past year in the realm of movies, TV, and Geekdom at large!

Daredevil is Marvel's Best Story of the Year

Marvel might have sent us the Avengers and Ant-Man this year, but none of their big screen heroes could match the high quality and brutal storytelling of Netflix's Daredevil. Capitalizing on the uncensored violence and grim tone that Netflix allows, Daredevil set a new standard for comic book storytelling on the small screen. If Marvel and Netflix can continue this type of success with future projects, we may have a new frontier for Marvel to dominate. For more about Daredevil, please read my full review here.

The Martian: Sets New Standard for Realistic Sci-Fi

While many were hyped after reading the book, having no knowledge of the hype surrounding it, The Martian came as a huge surprise to me. Realism and science-fiction do not go together all that well, and somehow, The Martian was only relatively accurate according to scientific theories, but it was one of the best sci-fi films of the past decade. Excluding sci-fi fantasy like Star Wars and Marvel, The Martian is a true gem in one of my favorite genres. For more about the Martian, please read my full review here.

Spider-Man Joins the MCU

After years of teasing us with speculation and rumor, Sony and Disney finally decided to let Spider-Man join the MCU! Tom Holland as Spider-Man is set to cameo in Civil War next year and Jon Watts will direct his first solo flick for 2017. Considering the difficulties both studios have had over the years, who would have expected Sony to finally agree to a deal? Granted, after the simi-failure of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, this is definitely the best option for the studio at this point, and of course, the fans are certainly pleased!

Man in the High Castle Proves that Amazon Prime is Legit

After falling behind to Netflix for years in quality original content, Amazon Prime's adaptation of Philip K. Dick's novel of the same name proved that Amazon Prime can deliver worthwhile television if they try. While The Man in the High Castle had its flaws with some pacing issues and a lack of focus, overall, it showed us a terrifying world of what life could have been like if the Axis Powers won WWII. Thankfully, the series made up for its issues with stellar acting, high production value, and a fascinating and frightening exploration of the "What If."

One-Punch Man: Best Superhero of the Year

Marvel and DC might be battling it out for the top superhero in cinemas, but over in Japan a little 12 episode TV series, titled One-Punch Man, about an average guy named Saitama turned superhero with the ability to win any battle with One-Punch flipped the superhero genre on its head. While the concept sounds boring, in practice, it is an ingenious comedy with some of the most insanely awesome action sequences in animation. If you like superheroes, you should check out the most fun superhero adventure of the year, which you can watch on Hulu for free (click here).

What surprised you this year? What were some of the highlights of the year for you? Please comment below and let me know!

Note: I have yet to see Star Wars. However, chances are, by the time you are reading this, I might be in the theater watching it.

Marvel's Jessica Jones and The Man in the High Castle

Two days ago, the two most highly anticipated TV series on instant video have arrived! And those series are Marvel's Jessica Jones on Netflix and The Man in the High Castle on Amazon Prime. Chances are, you have already seen the trailer for Jessica Jones or even watched an episode of it already. Currently, I am putting it on hold until I catch up to the shows on my DVR after stopping everything to marathon Breaking Bad, which I will review soon, but a review for Jessica Jones is likely on the way within the next month or so.

While you may have heard of Jessica Jones, you may not have heard of The Man in the High Castle. The series is based on a 1962 novel by Philip K. Dick, the novelist behind the original novel that movies like Blade Runner and A Scanner Darkly are based on. The Man in the High Castle is set in an alternate 1962 where the Axis Powers of Nazi Germany and Japan won WWII and now occupies the United States. Last month, Amazon Prime released the first two episodes of the series, and after watching them, I have to say that this is going to an intriguing watch. Right from the start, there is an eerie tone because even the thought of the Axis winning the war is absolutely terrifying! American Jews are executed, the old and sick are euthanized, and there is a crushing sense of despair and hopelessness. Of course, the series is not for the faint of heart and it is rated TV-MA, and therefore recommended for mature audiences. However, if this concept intrigues you, give it a watch. There is a twist towards the end of the first that makes me have to know how this story is going to end. Are you going to watch either series? Please comment below and let me know!

Marvel's Jessica Jones - Official Trailer

After countless teasers, a real trailer for Jessica Jones is finally here, and David Tennant, the 10th Doctor in Doctor Who, will play the villain, Dr. Zebediah Killgrave, aka Purple Man. Somehow, I completely overlooked the fact that David Tennant will star in the new Jessica Jones series! Considering that Fisk in Daredevil turned out to be one of Marvel's best villains, I have high hopes for Tennant's take on Killgrave. As for the rest of the trailer, it gives me much higher hopes that the series will succeed. Everything about the trailer sets up an interesting plot full of intrigue and thrills. Luke Cage's role appears to be larger, and Krysten Ritter looks excellent in the role. If Tennant is as excellent a villain as I hope, we are in for a real treat! What do you think? Daredevil Season 2 Teaser Trailer

A new teaser trailer for Daredevil Season 2 is here, and it gives us our first look, or rather hint, at Jon Bernthal's The Punisher and Élodie Yung's Elektra. This is a teaser so no one expects much, but it is great to see the two new characters. Usually, when a superhero flick has two villains, the result can be rushed. However, thanks to the runtime of a TV series, Daredevil should be able to pull it off.

Visually, I like the brief look of the Punisher. It is not much to go on, but he looks like the kind of guy that will punish evil. Peter McRobbie as Father Lantom makes a more than welcome return as the protagonist's conscience, and he is the perfect character to be the mouthpiece for the moral dilemmas that Matt faces. Lastly, fingers crossed for a much improved costume! What do you think? Let me know in the comments below, and check back soon for a Reader's Choice poll.

Marvel's Jessica Jones Teaser Trailer

Marvel's Jessica Jones, Netflix's follow-up to the wildly successful Daredevil series, now has a teaser. However, the teaser is more of a stylized sequence with an almost comic book like appearance. It shows a few of the character's more notable visual aspects, like "Alias: Private Investigation." While Daredevil is one of the best things to happen to comic book media since The Avengers, I wonder if Jessica Jones can capture a similar level of excellence with its Netflix series, which premieres on November 20. What do you think of the teaser? Also, do you plan to watch Jessica Jones? Please comment below and me know!

Daredevil News: Punisher has been Cast!

Exciting news for the upcoming season two of Netflix's Daredevil! The Punisher will be played by Jon Bernthal. Bernthal is most well known for playing Shane on The Walking Dead. Bernthal seems to be a good fit for the part, especially with the gritty tone of the Daredevil series. My only small issue, which is very much a personal thing, is that he one of the few actors that I cannot separate from his previous role as Shane, aka the most terrible scumbag in television. Other than that, I believe he will work well in the role. As for Punisher as a character, he is Marvel's vigilante that kills people with guns. He might show mercy sometimes, but once you are his target, often criminals, but occasionally heroes, he will take you down. In some ways, he is an interesting opposing force with similar goals to Daredevil, so I cannot wait for the next season. What are your thoughts? Please comment below and let me know! Also, check back tomorrow for my Father's Day special post of the Top 5 Fathers in Movies!

Daredevil Netflix (Season 1) Review

Daredevil, the new Netflix series that shows how Marvel on the small screen can be just as good, if not better, than its big screen counterparts.
There is no reason to leave you in suspense with my opinion because Daredevil is absolutely amazing! Daredevil blends superhero action, political thrills, and even a fresh take on the crime drama genre. It uses the unique advantages of Netflix to create an adaptation that falls somewhere in-between television and film.

Summary: Daredevil is a 13 episode Netflix original series starring Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio. Cox plays Matt Murdock who, by day is runs a law firm with friend Foggy Nelson. However, at night, Murdock uses his enhanced senses, which he gained after being blinded by chemicals at a young age, to fight crime and clean up the streets of New York's Hell's Kitchen.

Note: For the sake of brevity, I refer to Daredevil as a "TV series" or just "series," even though it is not technically on "television."

Plot: 9.7/10- Daredevil's narrative switches between Matt's past and the present events to tell his origin story without halting the plot. With the additional few minutes and lack of commercial breaks afforded by Netflix's format, Daredevil's pacing is always moving forward without having to create that moment of "suspense" to make the viewer come back after the break, which produces a more cinematic experience. In regards to that, do yourself a favor and watch Daredevil on a television if possible and not a computer screen; you do will yourself a disservice otherwise.

Tonally, Daredevil is dark and gritty executed to near perfection. Instead of using visual filters to create the illusion of "dark and gritty," the series' visuals are raw. The dark underworld of Hell's Kitchen looks real, which gives off the raw tone that makes the series work so well. However, at times, the cinematography could be better, but as a whole, Drew Goddard and co. deliver the goods. Despite Daredevil being far darker than other Marvel properties, it still fits in the world, since it takes place in the dark corners that the main heroes never delve into.

Obviously, the creators of Daredevil wrote the series as a one off with only the Defenders miniseries to continue. Therefore, the writers take big risks and the results are rewarding. You never know what to expect. Every time you think you know how certain often used scenes will turn out; they flip the cliché on its head and does something entirely different, which is fantastic. It takes the usual crime drama tropes and subverts them without a hitch.

As someone with knowledge of the comic books, certain twists are shocking. While I have only read a few Daredevil comics, this makes me want to pick up Frank Miller's "Man Without Fear" run, which heavily influenced certain elements of the series.
The references to the Marvel universe are subtle yet effective. It uses the destruction of New York in The Avengers as a plot element for the actions of the criminals in the series, and it is a rather brilliant idea.

As with any multiple episode series, there are moments where the writings' quality takes a slight dip with infrequent illogical moments. However, compared to most other TV series, Daredevil's occasional lapses in quality are few and far between with the final few episodes feeling slightly rushed.

Admittedly, my review of Agents of SHIELD season one last year was bias due to my love of Marvel, and therefore I overrated the series. However, with Daredevil, I feel the need to stress that my review is not just "fanboy" raving. Daredevil is a highly sophisticated story that is among the best that I have seen from the medium.

Characterization-Acting: 9.9/10- Much like my review of Age of Ultron, my thoughts on the individually will be split up for another post. However, it is suffice to say that the characters are exceptionally written with Charlie Cox’s Daredevil ranking among my favorite superhero performances and Vincent D'Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk potentially being the best villain in the MCU.

Action/Direction: 9.9/10- From the very first scene, Daredevil's action direction is a clear cut above everything else that you will find on the small screen, and it is one of the many highlights of the series as a whole.

As a connoisseur of action so to speak, how action sequences are directed and framed in the camera are important to me. All too often, action in western media use unbearable amounts of shaky-cam, dark lighting, and clunky choreography. Eastern films and a few western films have high quality action direction, but it is an art that is frequently left at the wayside. Thankfully, whoever was the action director of Daredevil, particularly the early episodes, did an exceptional job.

Depending on the action sequence, particularly the ones in the first half, the fights are brutal and raw, while also well choreographed. There is a rawness to the fights that reminds me of the first Raid film, albeit not nearly as flashy or bad*ss. The choreography combines martial arts, boxing, street brawling, and Matt's unique powers to create well directed sequences that make you feel every punch. Other than his enhanced senses, Matt is essentially human, which adds another layer of tension, because he is a vulnerable human being. Despite the dark lighting in many scenes, the light present brilliantly highlights what the viewer needs to see, and there is NEVER any shaky-cam!

The final action sequence at the end of episode two is one the best action sequences that I have seen from western entertainment, not just television. It is reminiscent of Oldboy's hallway fight scene to a small degree with its use of its seemingly the one-take style. *Mild Spoiler* As the fight progresses, Matt is struggling to fight the swarm of enemies, and he uses the wall for momentum to add an extra force to his punch. You can feel his desperation; it is amazing! *End Spoilers*
My only issue is that a few of the action sequences later in the series are not nearly as well executed. They are still a cut-above the rest, yet lack the rawness of the earlier fights, particularly a duel with a specific red clad foe. However, other than that, the action is above and beyond that of other recent media.

Content: Being TV-MA and releasing on Netflix provides the series with advantages. First off, however, for those, like myself, that were worried that being TV-MA on Netflix would mean f-bombs and nudity, fear not, there is no such thing in the series. However, there is quite a bit of swearing with words like s**t and d**k, and while the usage of swearing is humorously awkward at times, what is used never seemed offensive to me.

As for the violence, it is far less than series like The Walking Dead. Not being forced to censor violence like films affords series the ability to use the violence to add the gritty tone in an organic fashion. The violence is not that excessive, in my opinion, although I am desensitized to violence in general, so I'm not exactly a good judge.

Lastly, there is very little on-screen suggestive content (a woman’s bareback). However, there are references to mature themes in the dialogue.

Humor: 8.1/10- In the dark and gritty world of Hell's Kitchen, there is still a sense of Marvel's trademark levity and wit, and yet it never breaks the seriousness. Much of the humor comes from the blind jokes by Matt and the character interaction earlier in the series. It is all organic, which is why it works.

Entertainment Value: 10/10- Daredevil glued me to the screen every single episode. It is riveting entertaining that sinks its teeth into you and never lets go!

Overall: 9.8/10- Daredevil is positively brilliant! Aside from an occasional narrative stumble, Daredevil's characters, story, and direction rank it among the best comic book adaptations in any media, whether it be film or television. If you enjoy well written media, Daredevil is an absolute must-watch, especially for fans of Marvel.

Closing Comments: Without exaggerating, Daredevil is among the best television series that I have ever seen, right up there with Firefly and Doctor Who. It far exceeded my expectations; season two cannot come soon enough.

Daredevil Released Today!

Marvel's new Daredevil is now released on Netflix! If you somehow do not already know, Marvel's new Daredevil Netflix is the first of five upcoming miniseries featuring different smaller scale Marvel heroes. While releasing it on Netflix does limit the audience, hopefully some of Netflix's usual quality will be seen in the series, although the trailers have not done much for me. After I watch the series, I will write a review of it, but I am not sure when that will be. Are you excited for the new series? Please comment below and let me know.

5 Marvel TV Shows on Netflix!

Breaking news: Marvel has signed a deal with Netflix where Marvel will produce four new series with a minimum of 13 each and the four characters of those series will team up for a Defenders miniseries. The characters that will each have their own TV series are Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones.
Okay wow, just wow, this news is unbelieveable! Even though I heard rumors about it, I never believed it would actually happen. First off, I am angry that the series will be reserved to Netflix, which I do not have. However, I suppose I will have to find the money to buy the service when these series come out. Other than that, I am excited for several reasons. First off, the series appear to be taking a more serious and darker route since they will be set on the streets of New York in Hell's Kitchen, a place where many Marvel heroes are known for inhabiting. Basically, all of the characters are street level heroes that deal with smaller crime opposed to world threatening things. Something slightly odd is that the Defenders team in the comics originally consisted of The Hulk, Silver Surfer, Doctor Strange, and Namor, and the team is brought together when the Earth is in danger, however this version of the Defenders is obviously smaller scale, more along the lines of Heroes for Hire. When these series will be released is unknown and any other details will most likely be released later on. Here is a quick rundown of the characters.
Daredevil: Played by Ben Affleck in a barely serviceable movie about ten years ago, Matt Murdock is a blind lawyer by day and a dark bringer of justice by night. Blinded when he was a young man, Matt developed incredibly enhanced sense including radar hearing and almost a sixth sense. He is also trained in martial arts. Think Batman if he was a dark hero that occasionally killed people when necessary.
Luke Cage: He is a former criminal who turned vigilante when he gained bulletproof skin and super strength. Cage has been part of the New Avengers and is the founding member of Heroes for Hire.
Iron Fist: Iron Fist is a martial arts expert who uses his ability to channel his chi to give him enhanced strength, powerful fist attacks, and other special powers. He is the other founding member of Heroes for Hire with Luke Cage.
Jessica Jones: An "Alias: Jessica Jones" TV has been in the works for years and now it has finally been greenlit. Due to a chemical spill, Jessica gained superhuman strength, flight, and durability, however what makes her unique is that she is a private detective and solves cases that often involve other superhumans. She also married Luke Cage later on in the comics.

If anyone is interested in knowing more about the characters and the comics, and my dream cast, please let me know.

What are your thoughts on this development? Please comment below.

Note: I did not get to see Thor: The Dark World last night unfortunately, however I do plan to see it later this week or the next.

Left to right: Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Iron Fist

New Batman is Ben Affleck?

Ben Affleck is officially cast as Batman in the upcoming sequel to Man of Steel, presumably named "Batman Vs. Superman." Well, this is surprising news, maybe he will end up directing Justice League movie after all, but more on that later. While many Nolanites and Batman fans are outraged, I am not entirely sure what to think. My reaction was almost literally what Captain Reynolds thought when he saw River in the first episode (video below). From what everyone has said, Ben Affleck has become a good actor and an excellent director since the disappointing Daredevil film. Yes, Ben Affleck has already played a comic book character, a Marvel one to be specific, and what I find funny is how Daredevil is the closest thing to Batman in the Marvel universe, except Daredevil is a much darker character in the comics and one of the best. About the Daredevil film, it was not very good; it basically got just about everything wrong with the character, however the movie itself is arguably average, and the director's cut is said to be a lot better. Also Disney-Marvel actually owns the rights to Daredevil now after Fox lost them. Back to Affleck as Batman, I am mostly indifferent about the choice. I have yet to see any of the movies he has directed, although I plan to watch some of them at some point. It was rumored a while back that Affleck might direct the Justice League movie, and considering that he often acts in the films that he directs that is not an entirely outlandish idea. While Zack Sndyer is the most likely candidate at this point, Affleck might be a better pick considering he directed the Oscar winning Argo, although his action direction is still in question. So, what do you think of this casting choice? Please comment below.

My initial reaction.

Daredevil Review.

If you have seen the movie please give it any score from 1 to 10.

Thoughts: We watched Daredevil when it back in 2003 and we hated it so we decided to watch it again and we liked it. Daredevil is like Marvel's Batman but darker, has some powers, and doesn't have a problem killing people that deserve it.

Directed by: Mark Steven Johnson
Genre: Action, Comic Book,
Release Date: February 14, 2003 (2003-02-14)
Running Time: 103 minutes
MMPA rating: PG-13

The Good: Ben Affleck was good as Daredevill and play a very convincing blind man,

The Bad: Casting for Bullseye (Colin Farrell) and Wilson Fisk (Michael Clarke Duncan) were bad choices for their roles, A few plot holes,

Plot: Matt Murdock (Ben Affleck) is a blind lawyer who lives in New York City's Hell's Kitchen and runs a firm with his best friend Franklin "Foggy" Nelson (Jon Favreau), which only defends innocent people and does not require payment.
As a child, Matt (Scott Terra) was blinded after toxic waste was spilled over his eyes while he was running away from home after discovering that his father, former boxer Jack "The Devil" Murdock (David Keith), had become an enforcer for a local mobster. The accident, however, also enhanced his other senses and gave him a sonar that allowed him to "see" through sonic vibrations. His father, blaming himself for his disability, stopped being an enforcer and went back to boxing. However, his new career was short-lived and he was murdered after refusing to turn in a fixed fight by the same mobster that had employed him earlier. In order to avenge his father's death, Matt learned martial arts and used his abilities to become a crime-fighter known as "Daredevil", who operates in Hell's Kitchen, going after the criminals that escape the conventional means of justice.
One day, Matt meets and falls in love with Elektra Natchios (Jennifer Garner), daughter of Nikolas Natchios (Erick Avari), a businessman that has dealings with Wilson Fisk (Michael Clarke Duncan), a rich executive who is also the Kingpin of New York City's Underworld. When Nikolas tries to bail on his dealings with Fisk, Fisk hires the Irish hitman Bullseye (Colin Farrell), who never misses a shot, to kill him. Watch the movie to see what happens next.

Plot: 7.4/10- Daredevil's plot was good but had a few plot holes.

Action: 7.0/10- Daredevil's action scenes were like The Matrix but looked fake and out of place.

Acting: 6.5/10- Every scene that Ben Affleck(Daredevil) and Jennifer Garner(Elektra) were was good their acting was top notch but the scenes with Bullseye (Colin Farrell) and Wilson Fisk (Michael Clarke Duncan) were not very good.

Special effects: 6.3/10- The special effects were ok but a little dated.

Soundtrack: 2.2/10- The soundtrack of licensed music was terrible and destacted from the movie but if you like that kind of music you might like it.

Comedy: 7.7/10- Daredevil is not a comedy but there were two very funny near the beginning of the movie.

Overall: 6.3/10- Overall Daredevil is at its best when its more about Daredevil and lest about the villians.

Closing comments: Although Daredevil is a solid watchable movie, it is not the definitive Daredevil movie.
