The Great Debate: Netflix vs. Hulu vs. Amazon Prime Video

Today, new guest author, Cassie, from CultureCoverage.com, is presenting an article about the great debate between the three biggest online streaming services, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime! Take it away Cassie!

Many thanks to J and J Productions 1809 for allowing me to share the pros and cons of some of the best streaming services available so you won’t regret any of your subscriptions. And if you aren’t quite sure what you’re looking to watch yet, check out this article on the Top 100 Movies.
So what really sets Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Video apart? Well besides their subscriptions plans differing, each has their own library and features that might appeal to some more than others. Perhaps the most important feature though, for any of these services, is their compatibility with different devices.

Not everyone has a PC to stream movies on, and instead rely on other devices such as Smart TVs, tablets and game consoles. A large number of users also prefer to stream while on the go, as it often beats paying to view movies while at a hotel during your travels. Speed, reliability and cost can be a main concern as well.

Which genre of movies and TV shows you’re interested in can also be a contributing factor to your decision. Some streaming services offer limited amounts of anime, for example, whereas others have a better selection. Though there are genre-specific streaming services available (such as Crunchyroll), let's take a look at how three of the most popular services compare.

Netflix
Netflix is a little bit different than other streaming services since you can choose to receive DVDs if preferred. Though a plan including DVDs is a separate cost, it’s nice to have the option available. DVD plans range between $4.99 and $14.99 per month, depending on how many discs you're able to rent out at a time, how many you’re able to rent per month and whether you choose to rent Blu-Ray discs or standard DVDs.

Streaming plans cost between $7.99 and $11.99 per month, and prices are dependent on whether or not you choose a plan with HD or Ultra HD streaming and how many screens you’d like to be able to watch on at once. Certain plans will only allow one user to watch at a time, making it difficult for those who want to share their accounts with anyone else.

On the topic of sharing, Netflix now allows you to create different user profiles too, which is particularly handy when you don’t want to lose where you left off in a movie or TV show due to sharing your account. With Netflix, you can also view a selection of suggested titles that are based on your prior viewing history. As you can imagine, this makes it easy to discover new content and videos you wouldn’t have normally thought to watch.

Overall, Netflix is a great choice due to their low price point, lack of commercials, ease of use and selection. They appear to have a little bit of something for everyone, even offering a large selection of international movies. Netflix’s compatibility across different devices is seriously impressive too, as you can watch from several different streaming media players (such as Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire, Chromecast, Nexus Player and NVIDIA Shield), game consoles, smartphones and more.
No need to worry if you’re hesitant about subscribing before viewing their library of movies and TV shows either—Netflix offers a one month free trial with the option to cancel at any time.

Hulu
Hulu used to be the streaming service of choice for those looking to keep up with some of their favorite TV shows since they release new episodes the day after they premiere on cable TV. However, in the past few years, Hulu has stepped up their game by adding a fairly large selection of movies to stream. Like Netflix, their subscription plans for streaming costs between $7.99 and $11.99 per month but commercials are unfortunately included in their $7.99 plan.

Hulu offers a ShowTime add-on as well for an additional $8.99 per month, which will allow you to access content that would normally be found on ShowTime’s channels on cable TV (such as “Penny Dreadful,” “House of Lies” and “Homeland”). If you’re especially interested in some of ShowTime’s original movies or TV shows, Hulu might be a good choice for you (if you don’t already subscribe to ShowTime with a cable provider, at least).

There's no doubt that Hulu does offer some titles that Netflix doesn't, but overall, Netflix offers a little more for the money. Besides the commercials that are included on their lowest cost plan, Hulu also only offers a one-week free trial, which can be especially easy for many viewers to cancel before their credit card is billed (assuming they decide not to keep the service).

As far as compatibility goes, there are a couple of devices Hulu appears to support that Netflix does not and that alone might make Hulu more worthwhile for you. You can check out a list of supported devices here. Overall, I’d say Hulu is worth the cost, but it does fall a little short of Netflix.

Amazon Video
Amazon Video is unlike both Netflix and Hulu. If you’re a frequent customer of Amazon’s, you likely already have an Amazon Prime subscription and if so, you have access to Amazon Video. And if you haven't signed up for a Prime membership, there's no need to fret over it; you can choose to sign up for Amazon Video (also known as Prime Video or Amazon Instant Video) regardless.
Amazon Video costs only $8.99 per month and offers a month-long free trial to get you started. Just as Hulu allows you to subscribe to ShowTime for an additional fee, so too does Amazon Video, and you can also pick from other popular entertainment channels such as Starz. In my opinion, Amazon Video is a bit more complicated to use than Hulu or Netflix, though it does have a nice selection of movies and includes original series.

Perhaps the most appealing feature Amazon Video has to offer is the ability to purchase the DVD of the movies you view with a simple click or the fact that you can read through thousands of reviews before watching or even post your own. If you're only looking for HD streaming, Amazon Video isn't the right choice for you though, and their list of supported devices is somewhat limited.

Something Else To Think About
No matter which streaming service you decide on, there are limitations to consider. Hulu, for example, isn't available worldwide, and the selections are likely to be different on Netflix if you live outside of the US. It’s a good idea to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) for any of these, to avoid issues while traveling or streaming on the go and also to avoid paying for service you can’t use if you’re going on a trip overseas.

VPN service will allow you to continue to watch American Netflix (and Hulu) even if you're located elsewhere by masking your IP address. It's as simple as connecting to a remote server in the program, and as a bonus, it also encrypts your connection so you'll be able to stream videos safely from anywhere.

Have you used any of these streaming services yet? If so, we’d love to hear your opinion on them in the comments section below.

Star Wars on Netflix - Season 1 Official Live Action Teaser Trailer

Star Wars is coming to Netflix! Coming soon, Netflix and Disney will release a Star Wars series live-action series title, "Star Wars: Fury of Maul," obviously starring Darth Maul. No word on the release date yet. However, as the teaser shows, it appears to be following Darth Maul after the events of The Clone Wars. Will a Netflix budget be able to handle the special effects required for quality Star Wars content? Considering how Daredevil is one of the best things to come from Marvel, a Star Wars Netflix series could be amazing! With that said, the trailer's effects and production design are lacking a bit, so who knows. What do you think of this breaking news? Please comment below and let me know!

Happy April Fools Everyone! Hope y'all liked that!

Romance Movies on Netflix

Valentine's Day is fast approaching, so if you are in the mood for a romance movie on Netflix, use the flowchart below to find the romance movie for you. ProFlowers emailed me this interesting flowchart of romance movies on Netflix to post on J and J Productions! For fun, please comment below with the romance movie that the flowchart ends on for you. For me, it ended on Roman Holiday, which is certainly a great one! And please note that I have not seen all of, or even most, of these movies, so be aware of that. Otherwise, hope you enjoyed the flowchart and comment on what movie you ended on.

5 Surprises of 2015

2015 is coming to an end! And to end the year, let's take a look back at a few of the surprises from the past year in the realm of movies, TV, and Geekdom at large!

Daredevil is Marvel's Best Story of the Year

Marvel might have sent us the Avengers and Ant-Man this year, but none of their big screen heroes could match the high quality and brutal storytelling of Netflix's Daredevil. Capitalizing on the uncensored violence and grim tone that Netflix allows, Daredevil set a new standard for comic book storytelling on the small screen. If Marvel and Netflix can continue this type of success with future projects, we may have a new frontier for Marvel to dominate. For more about Daredevil, please read my full review here.

The Martian: Sets New Standard for Realistic Sci-Fi

While many were hyped after reading the book, having no knowledge of the hype surrounding it, The Martian came as a huge surprise to me. Realism and science-fiction do not go together all that well, and somehow, The Martian was only relatively accurate according to scientific theories, but it was one of the best sci-fi films of the past decade. Excluding sci-fi fantasy like Star Wars and Marvel, The Martian is a true gem in one of my favorite genres. For more about the Martian, please read my full review here.

Spider-Man Joins the MCU

After years of teasing us with speculation and rumor, Sony and Disney finally decided to let Spider-Man join the MCU! Tom Holland as Spider-Man is set to cameo in Civil War next year and Jon Watts will direct his first solo flick for 2017. Considering the difficulties both studios have had over the years, who would have expected Sony to finally agree to a deal? Granted, after the simi-failure of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, this is definitely the best option for the studio at this point, and of course, the fans are certainly pleased!

Man in the High Castle Proves that Amazon Prime is Legit

After falling behind to Netflix for years in quality original content, Amazon Prime's adaptation of Philip K. Dick's novel of the same name proved that Amazon Prime can deliver worthwhile television if they try. While The Man in the High Castle had its flaws with some pacing issues and a lack of focus, overall, it showed us a terrifying world of what life could have been like if the Axis Powers won WWII. Thankfully, the series made up for its issues with stellar acting, high production value, and a fascinating and frightening exploration of the "What If."

One-Punch Man: Best Superhero of the Year

Marvel and DC might be battling it out for the top superhero in cinemas, but over in Japan a little 12 episode TV series, titled One-Punch Man, about an average guy named Saitama turned superhero with the ability to win any battle with One-Punch flipped the superhero genre on its head. While the concept sounds boring, in practice, it is an ingenious comedy with some of the most insanely awesome action sequences in animation. If you like superheroes, you should check out the most fun superhero adventure of the year, which you can watch on Hulu for free (click here).

What surprised you this year? What were some of the highlights of the year for you? Please comment below and let me know!

Note: I have yet to see Star Wars. However, chances are, by the time you are reading this, I might be in the theater watching it.

Thanksgiving Netflix Picks: Movies to Watch on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and if you want to watch a movie to get you in the spirit of Thanksgiving on Netflix, here is your quick guide! Granted, Thanksgiving movies are not particularly common, which makes finding ones on Netflix are even more difficult. However, there are three that may get you into the spirit of Thanksgiving or at least have something Thanksgiving related. Also, please check back tomorrow for my review of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Planes, Trains and Automobiles is my definitive Thanksgiving movie. It follows two guys, played by comedic legends Steve Martin and John Candy, as they end up in a ridiculous road trip that ends with a positive message. The film is directed by John Hughes, who is known for such classics as Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Breakfast Club, and yet Planes, Trains and Automobiles is still my favorite. Please note that the film is essentially an 80s PG movie comedy, except for one scene where Steve Martin's character goes off on a tirade of f-words, so if you are watching it with the family, be aware. Otherwise, this is the movie for Thanksgiving fun!

Addams Family Values
Honestly, Addams Family Values makes this list by default since it is one of the only movies on Netflix to feature Thanksgiving. As for the film's quality, I just cannot remember that well. It has literally been 10 years since I have seen it, but others seem to like it!

Pocahontas
If you have children that you need to entertain during the Holiday, Pocahontas is probably a great pick, despite having almost semblance of historical accuracy. Like my previous pick, I have not seen Pocahontas in a very long time, so I cannot vouch for its quality as an adult. However, I remember enjoying it as a young child.

Well, there's my Netflix Picks for Thanksgiving! Do you have any recommendations? Please comment below and let me know!

Marvel's Jessica Jones and The Man in the High Castle

Two days ago, the two most highly anticipated TV series on instant video have arrived! And those series are Marvel's Jessica Jones on Netflix and The Man in the High Castle on Amazon Prime. Chances are, you have already seen the trailer for Jessica Jones or even watched an episode of it already. Currently, I am putting it on hold until I catch up to the shows on my DVR after stopping everything to marathon Breaking Bad, which I will review soon, but a review for Jessica Jones is likely on the way within the next month or so.

While you may have heard of Jessica Jones, you may not have heard of The Man in the High Castle. The series is based on a 1962 novel by Philip K. Dick, the novelist behind the original novel that movies like Blade Runner and A Scanner Darkly are based on. The Man in the High Castle is set in an alternate 1962 where the Axis Powers of Nazi Germany and Japan won WWII and now occupies the United States. Last month, Amazon Prime released the first two episodes of the series, and after watching them, I have to say that this is going to an intriguing watch. Right from the start, there is an eerie tone because even the thought of the Axis winning the war is absolutely terrifying! American Jews are executed, the old and sick are euthanized, and there is a crushing sense of despair and hopelessness. Of course, the series is not for the faint of heart and it is rated TV-MA, and therefore recommended for mature audiences. However, if this concept intrigues you, give it a watch. There is a twist towards the end of the first that makes me have to know how this story is going to end. Are you going to watch either series? Please comment below and let me know!

Halloween Netflix Picks #3: Movies to Watch

Welcome to a special Halloween edition of Netflix Picks where I recommend three creepy movies that perfect to watch on Halloween that you can find on Netflix!

Scream
More of a satire of the horror genre than a pure horror, Scream follows high school student Sidney Prescott in a small town where a murder in a mask terrorizes the town. While often more humorous than scary, Scream both parodies the tropes of the horror genre, as well as crafting a surprisingly competent mystery.
Release Date: December 20, 1996
Running Time: 111 minutes
MMPA rating: R

The Babadook
An Australian-Canadian psychological horror flick, The Babadook is the hidden gem of 2014. Horror is not my forte, and yet The Babadook stands as one of the more intelligent films in the genre from the last few years. Instead of relying on tons of mindless gore, The Babadook manages to use suspense and build-up to create its thrills. In addition, the film has a surprising amount of heart as it is a story about a single mother trying to raise her troubled child. The first 40 minutes of the film are undeniably slow. However, once the thrills begin, the pace really picks up. With that said, there are plenty of minor logic issues and points where the film's seriousness is undermined. Considering how awful most horror movies are today, these flaws can be overlooked.
Release Date: 22 May 2014
Running Time: 94 minutes
MMPA rating: PG-13

The Silence of the Lambs
Silence of the Lambs  follows FBI agent, Clarice Starling,  as she attempts to track down serial killer "Buffalo Bill" before he claims his next victim. To help find "Buffalo Bill," she interviews cannibalistic serial killer, Hannibal Lecter, and thus begins one of the most thrilling and frightening crime dramas of all-time. Currently the only horror film to win the Oscar for Best Picture, The Silence of the Lambs might not look like the typical horror fodder that you see but it is every bit as disturbing as it sounds. Hopkins' performance Hannibal Lecter is an absolute must-watch for any film fan that can stomach the grotesque matter, and as a crime thriller, there are few that maintain such strong tension.
Release Date: February 14, 1991
Running Time: 118 minutes
MMPA rating: R

There are many other horror films on Netflix here, as well as other streaming services. Which do you recommend? Please comment below and let me know!

Note: The above films are available on American Netflix as of 10/30/15.

Marvel's Jessica Jones - Official Trailer

After countless teasers, a real trailer for Jessica Jones is finally here, and David Tennant, the 10th Doctor in Doctor Who, will play the villain, Dr. Zebediah Killgrave, aka Purple Man. Somehow, I completely overlooked the fact that David Tennant will star in the new Jessica Jones series! Considering that Fisk in Daredevil turned out to be one of Marvel's best villains, I have high hopes for Tennant's take on Killgrave. As for the rest of the trailer, it gives me much higher hopes that the series will succeed. Everything about the trailer sets up an interesting plot full of intrigue and thrills. Luke Cage's role appears to be larger, and Krysten Ritter looks excellent in the role. If Tennant is as excellent a villain as I hope, we are in for a real treat! What do you think? Please comment below and let me know!

Daredevil Season 2 Teaser Trailer

A new teaser trailer for Daredevil Season 2 is here, and it gives us our first look, or rather hint, at Jon Bernthal's The Punisher and Élodie Yung's Elektra. This is a teaser so no one expects much, but it is great to see the two new characters. Usually, when a superhero flick has two villains, the result can be rushed. However, thanks to the runtime of a TV series, Daredevil should be able to pull it off.

Visually, I like the brief look of the Punisher. It is not much to go on, but he looks like the kind of guy that will punish evil. Peter McRobbie as Father Lantom makes a more than welcome return as the protagonist's conscience, and he is the perfect character to be the mouthpiece for the moral dilemmas that Matt faces. Lastly, fingers crossed for a much improved costume! What do you think? Let me know in the comments below, and check back soon for a Reader's Choice poll.

Netflix Picks #2: 3 TV Shows to Watch on Netflix

Netflix Picks, the post series where I recommend things that you can watch right now on Netflix, is back again!

Sherlock
With season 4 of Sherlock set to arrive.... whenever Steven Moffat feels like it, there is no better time than the present to catch up with the modern reimagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary detective, Sherlock Holmes. Despite the series' relative brevity, basically nine 90 minute TV movies, BBC's Sherlock is an absolute must watch. Benedict Cumberbatch is a brilliant Holmes and Martin Freeman is, by far, my favorite John Watson put to screen. Equally balancing characterization, humor, and each mystery, Sherlock elevates the TV mystery genre to new heights, and being so short, you have absolutely no reason not to watch this brilliant and witty adventure.
Seasons: 3
Episodes: 9
Runtime: 90 mins
The IT Crowd
A British comedy about the IT (Information Technologies) department at Reynholm Industries, a fictional corporation in London, The IT Crowd is one of the pure funniest TV shows ever made. With a zany style all its own, The IT Crowd is a unique comedy to be sure. Instead of going the route of quantity over quality, like many US sitcoms, The IT Crowd only features 24 episodes over 4 seasons. Each episode is like a setup to several big jokes with the punchline at the end, with many smaller hilarious jokes intertwined.  Describing how the series' humor works is difficult, but you are up for some wacky and occasionally surreal comedy that defies conventions, watch The IT Crowd.
Warning: The IT Crowd is intended for mature audiences. There are occasional uses of strong profanity, as well as potentially offensive humor (but what comedy doesn't have that?).
Seasons: 4
Episodes: 24
Runtime: 24 mins
Star Wars: The Clone Wars
The Force Awakens is on its way, and in the meantime, why not watch some of the best on-screen Star Wars stories since the Original Trilogy. While the first few episodes lean towards less mature themes, after the episode "Rookies," The Clone Wars turns into best thing to happen to the Star Wars franchise in years. Unfortunately, The Clone Wars is one the casualties of Disney buying the franchise, and thus it did not receive a proper conclusion. However, that should not dissuade you from experiencing the series' many exciting stories that explore new regions of the Star Wars mythos. In many ways, it is a perfect showcase of what the upcoming standalone films can and should be. Some episodes might feature zombie-esque thrills, while others might explore a more mystical side of the Force. Regardless, The Clone Wars is a must-watch for Star Wars fans of all-ages.
Seasons: 6
Episodes: 121
Runtime: 24 mins

Netflix Knows Which Episode Gets You Hooked

Netflix recently released data on the watching habits of their viewers, which reveals that the pilot episode is not the one that gets people hooked! Below the graph is a full list including which episodes hooked viewers.

Netflix is known for withholding their statistics from the public, so even the fact that they are releasing this is not a common occurrence. However, the results fascinate me. Arrow is a perfect example of a series that does not get going until after episode 8, and even my friend dropped the series around episode 6. On the other hand, fan-favorite Breaking Bad only required two episodes before the typical viewer is hooked. Considering both the series' quality and unanimously positive response from anyone and everyone, chances are, if you plan to watch Breaking Bad, you are going to watch it until the end. The larger number of episodes that Daredevil required did, however, surprise me due to how fast Netflix renewed it, and the series overall popularity. Other than that, these stats are intriguing for sure. Lastly, thanks everyone for the positive response to my new "Netflix Picks" series. Providing it remains this popular, expect a new post every week with a mixture of movies and TV recommendations! What do you think? Please comment below and let me know!
  • Arrow - Episode 8
  • Bates Motel - Episode 2
  • Better Call Saul - Episode 4
  • Bloodline - Episode 4
  • BoJack Horseman - Episode 5
  • Breaking Bad - Episode 2
  • Dexter - Episode 3
  • Gossip Girl - Episode 3
  • Grace & Frankie - Episode 4
  • House of Cards - Episode 3
  • How I Met Your Mother - Episode 8
  • Mad Men - Episode 6
  • Marco Polo - Episode 3
  • Marvel’s Daredevil - Episode 5
  • Once Upon a Time - Episode 6
  • Orange is the New Black - Episode 3
  • Pretty Little Liars - Episode 4
  • Scandal - Episode 2
  • Sense8 - Episode 3
  • Sons of Anarchy - Episode 2
  • Suits - Episode 2
  • The Blacklist - Episode 6
  • The Killing - Episode 2
  • The Walking Dead - Episode 2
  • Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt - Episode 4

Netflix Picks: 3 Movies to Watch on Netflix

Netflix is the most popular service for video streaming with literally thousands of TV shows and movies to watch, and the content that they provide is constantly changing, so today, I present a new series of posts: "Netflix Picks." It is a post series where I pick several movies or TV shows on Netflix that you might have overlooked. Even if you do not have Netflix, these are three great films that you should check out. Let’s get started.
Note: The following movies are available on North American (and possibly other regions) as of 9/22/15.

The Sixth Sense
Before M. Night Shyamalan made awful movies, he made modern classics like The Sixth Sense. The film follows a young boy named Cole Sear, who can see strange things that others cannot, which frightens his mother. Psychiatrist, Dr. Malcolm Crowe, is hired to talk to the boy about what he sees and what might be causing it. However, everything is not as it first seems.

If you have yet to see The Sixth Sense, you have probably already had the film spoiled by now. However, if you have not been spoiled, you need to watch The Sixth Sense as soon as possible, because someone somewhere will spoil the film. It is a given, and if you are lucky enough to next to nothing about it, go watch it. It is one of the most intriguing films that I have seen, and Haley Joel Osment, gives an excellent child performance.

Ip Man
After The Raid, Ip Man is the quintessential martial arts film that everyone should watch at least once. The film stars Donnie Yen, so you might recognize him as being one of the stars of the upcoming Star Wars side-story, Rouge One, and if you are a Star Wars fan, Ip Man should give you an idea of just how kick*ss he is going to be in that film. Ip Man’s story is loosely inspired by the life of Ip Man, master of the martial art Wing Chun, and the man that taught Bruce Lee. While the film takes some drastic changes from history, the action direction is some of the finest you will ever see. For more about Ip Man, read my full review here.

Breakfast at Tiffany's
From back when romance movies were actually good, Breakfast at Tiffany's is one of Audrey Hepburn most famous films and for good reason. While it may not be her best film or even the best romantic comedy-drama from the era, it is leaps and bounds ahead of just about all of the schmaltzy romcoms of today. As always, Hepburn is a delight in the lead role, as her grace and wit shine bright throughout the film.

Marvel's Jessica Jones Teaser Trailer

Marvel's Jessica Jones, Netflix's follow-up to the wildly successful Daredevil series, now has a teaser. However, the teaser is more of a stylized sequence with an almost comic book like appearance. It shows a few of the character's more notable visual aspects, like "Alias: Private Investigation." While Daredevil is one of the best things to happen to comic book media since The Avengers, I wonder if Jessica Jones can capture a similar level of excellence with its Netflix series, which premieres on November 20. What do you think of the teaser? Also, do you plan to watch Jessica Jones? Please comment below and me know!

Daredevil Netflix (Season 1) Review

Daredevil, the new Netflix series that shows how Marvel on the small screen can be just as good, if not better, than its big screen counterparts.
There is no reason to leave you in suspense with my opinion because Daredevil is absolutely amazing! Daredevil blends superhero action, political thrills, and even a fresh take on the crime drama genre. It uses the unique advantages of Netflix to create an adaptation that falls somewhere in-between television and film.

Summary: Daredevil is a 13 episode Netflix original series starring Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio. Cox plays Matt Murdock who, by day is runs a law firm with friend Foggy Nelson. However, at night, Murdock uses his enhanced senses, which he gained after being blinded by chemicals at a young age, to fight crime and clean up the streets of New York's Hell's Kitchen.

Note: For the sake of brevity, I refer to Daredevil as a "TV series" or just "series," even though it is not technically on "television."

Plot: 9.7/10- Daredevil's narrative switches between Matt's past and the present events to tell his origin story without halting the plot. With the additional few minutes and lack of commercial breaks afforded by Netflix's format, Daredevil's pacing is always moving forward without having to create that moment of "suspense" to make the viewer come back after the break, which produces a more cinematic experience. In regards to that, do yourself a favor and watch Daredevil on a television if possible and not a computer screen; you do will yourself a disservice otherwise.

Tonally, Daredevil is dark and gritty executed to near perfection. Instead of using visual filters to create the illusion of "dark and gritty," the series' visuals are raw. The dark underworld of Hell's Kitchen looks real, which gives off the raw tone that makes the series work so well. However, at times, the cinematography could be better, but as a whole, Drew Goddard and co. deliver the goods. Despite Daredevil being far darker than other Marvel properties, it still fits in the world, since it takes place in the dark corners that the main heroes never delve into.

Obviously, the creators of Daredevil wrote the series as a one off with only the Defenders miniseries to continue. Therefore, the writers take big risks and the results are rewarding. You never know what to expect. Every time you think you know how certain often used scenes will turn out; they flip the cliché on its head and does something entirely different, which is fantastic. It takes the usual crime drama tropes and subverts them without a hitch.

As someone with knowledge of the comic books, certain twists are shocking. While I have only read a few Daredevil comics, this makes me want to pick up Frank Miller's "Man Without Fear" run, which heavily influenced certain elements of the series.
The references to the Marvel universe are subtle yet effective. It uses the destruction of New York in The Avengers as a plot element for the actions of the criminals in the series, and it is a rather brilliant idea.

As with any multiple episode series, there are moments where the writings' quality takes a slight dip with infrequent illogical moments. However, compared to most other TV series, Daredevil's occasional lapses in quality are few and far between with the final few episodes feeling slightly rushed.

Admittedly, my review of Agents of SHIELD season one last year was bias due to my love of Marvel, and therefore I overrated the series. However, with Daredevil, I feel the need to stress that my review is not just "fanboy" raving. Daredevil is a highly sophisticated story that is among the best that I have seen from the medium.

Characterization-Acting: 9.9/10- Much like my review of Age of Ultron, my thoughts on the individually will be split up for another post. However, it is suffice to say that the characters are exceptionally written with Charlie Cox’s Daredevil ranking among my favorite superhero performances and Vincent D'Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk potentially being the best villain in the MCU.

Action/Direction: 9.9/10- From the very first scene, Daredevil's action direction is a clear cut above everything else that you will find on the small screen, and it is one of the many highlights of the series as a whole.

As a connoisseur of action so to speak, how action sequences are directed and framed in the camera are important to me. All too often, action in western media use unbearable amounts of shaky-cam, dark lighting, and clunky choreography. Eastern films and a few western films have high quality action direction, but it is an art that is frequently left at the wayside. Thankfully, whoever was the action director of Daredevil, particularly the early episodes, did an exceptional job.

Depending on the action sequence, particularly the ones in the first half, the fights are brutal and raw, while also well choreographed. There is a rawness to the fights that reminds me of the first Raid film, albeit not nearly as flashy or bad*ss. The choreography combines martial arts, boxing, street brawling, and Matt's unique powers to create well directed sequences that make you feel every punch. Other than his enhanced senses, Matt is essentially human, which adds another layer of tension, because he is a vulnerable human being. Despite the dark lighting in many scenes, the light present brilliantly highlights what the viewer needs to see, and there is NEVER any shaky-cam!

The final action sequence at the end of episode two is one the best action sequences that I have seen from western entertainment, not just television. It is reminiscent of Oldboy's hallway fight scene to a small degree with its use of its seemingly the one-take style. *Mild Spoiler* As the fight progresses, Matt is struggling to fight the swarm of enemies, and he uses the wall for momentum to add an extra force to his punch. You can feel his desperation; it is amazing! *End Spoilers*
My only issue is that a few of the action sequences later in the series are not nearly as well executed. They are still a cut-above the rest, yet lack the rawness of the earlier fights, particularly a duel with a specific red clad foe. However, other than that, the action is above and beyond that of other recent media.

Content: Being TV-MA and releasing on Netflix provides the series with advantages. First off, however, for those, like myself, that were worried that being TV-MA on Netflix would mean f-bombs and nudity, fear not, there is no such thing in the series. However, there is quite a bit of swearing with words like s**t and d**k, and while the usage of swearing is humorously awkward at times, what is used never seemed offensive to me.

As for the violence, it is far less than series like The Walking Dead. Not being forced to censor violence like films affords series the ability to use the violence to add the gritty tone in an organic fashion. The violence is not that excessive, in my opinion, although I am desensitized to violence in general, so I'm not exactly a good judge.

Lastly, there is very little on-screen suggestive content (a woman’s bareback). However, there are references to mature themes in the dialogue.

Humor: 8.1/10- In the dark and gritty world of Hell's Kitchen, there is still a sense of Marvel's trademark levity and wit, and yet it never breaks the seriousness. Much of the humor comes from the blind jokes by Matt and the character interaction earlier in the series. It is all organic, which is why it works.

Entertainment Value: 10/10- Daredevil glued me to the screen every single episode. It is riveting entertaining that sinks its teeth into you and never lets go!

Overall: 9.8/10- Daredevil is positively brilliant! Aside from an occasional narrative stumble, Daredevil's characters, story, and direction rank it among the best comic book adaptations in any media, whether it be film or television. If you enjoy well written media, Daredevil is an absolute must-watch, especially for fans of Marvel.

Closing Comments: Without exaggerating, Daredevil is among the best television series that I have ever seen, right up there with Firefly and Doctor Who. It far exceeded my expectations; season two cannot come soon enough.

Daredevil Released Today!

Marvel's new Daredevil is now released on Netflix! If you somehow do not already know, Marvel's new Daredevil Netflix is the first of five upcoming miniseries featuring different smaller scale Marvel heroes. While releasing it on Netflix does limit the audience, hopefully some of Netflix's usual quality will be seen in the series, although the trailers have not done much for me. After I watch the series, I will write a review of it, but I am not sure when that will be. Are you excited for the new series? Please comment below and let me know.
