Here is the second part of my Top 10 Movie Battles.
At Number 10: Seven Samurai Final Battle
The final battle at the end of the Akira Kurosawa's samurai epic, Seven Samurai, is the oldest battle on the list and it remains one of the best. Even though the battle might not have the amount of visceral thrills as many modern battles, Seven Samurai should be recognized for its quality considering the time in which it was filmed as well as being filmed in the rain, which created a fantastic atmosphere. The three hours leading up to this battle were definitely worth it.
At Number 9: Battle of Gotham
Before any Nolanite starts loosing their stuff over the low placing of the battle on my list, here is my main reason: the battle is more of a duel between Batman and Bane than an actual battle between multiple armies or people. While there certainly is some large scale fighting (hence it being on the list), the battle is more about Batman vs. Bane with the battle in the background.
At Number 8: Battle of Thermopylae
Inspired by true events of the 300 Spartans that fought the 30000 Persians and based on Frank Miller's graphic novel, Zack Sndyer's 300 had some awesome and gory battles. While the later battles in 300 are a little too over-the-top for my tastes, the first battle was freaking epic! 300 Spartans that can completely defy physics vs. a crap load of Persians, in slow-motion! The great fight choreography combined with the gravity defying special effects makes for a fun and epic battle.
At Number 7: Thor and Company vs. Frost Giants
The first battle that we get to see Thor throw is also one of the best. Despite the complains about the Dutch angles, the battle shows off Thor's epic battle skills along with his companions. The choreography of the fighting is excellent and the fact that the Frost Giants are actually guys in suits rather than CGI creatures is a big plus and prevents the scene from becoming a wacky and cartoony battle.
Note: Video above is darker than the actual scene on Blu-Ray.
At Number 6: Battle of Hogwarts
Basically, the battle of Hogwarts includes the last hour of the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which is one big epic battle of wizardry. Although the battle does not really include the duel Harry and Vordemort, the rest of the battle was huge, taking place across the entire campus of Hogwarts. Also note that this is the only picture I could find for the list, even if it is the duel between Harry Vordemort.

"I'm pointing my wand at you as hard as I can!" :D And the top half of the list will have Minas Tirith, Helm's Deep, and the Black Gate, Plus Hoth and the Avengers battle. Not bad...
ReplyDeleteHahaha, that part of HP's HISHE was hilarious! :D Actually all of the LOTR battles will be grouped into one place on the list, so there are a couple of other battles that will make the list.

I fail to understand why you are mashing all three together. But still the most epic 45 minutes of battle ever, (not that I've seen any others)
DeleteWell, I wanted to have a one battle per-franchise rule, otherwise the list would be filled with LOTR, Star Wars, and Avengers battles. And I wouldn't have a spot for Braveheart's epic battle.

Great battle list!!! :D Of the ones I've seen, I agree, they were awesome!! :D I especially loved the Harry Potter one- very exciting! :D
ReplyDeleteThank you! :D The part during HP's battle scene when the camera traveled throughout the school was just amazing!

Good subject, off the top of my head. Heat the Bank robbery shootout. Apocalypse now the surf battle

The fifth element battle with the Mangalore aboard the space liner.

As I said in my first Movie Battles post, realistic military battles and shootout will be on another list, however Ride of the Valkyries was a great battle scene, but I do need to watch the Fifth Element and Heat though, Thanks for commenting Steve!

You've seen The Seven Samurai? I envy you! I've never managed to find it in a video store or library. It's on my Amazon wish list, but I haven't gotten around to ordering it yet. Should I? I absolutely adore the western version, The Magnificent Seven, so I've always wanted to see the original.
ReplyDeleteYes I have! When I had a Blu-Ray/DVD mail order service I was able to rent the Blu-Ray, which was fantastic. As for if you would enjoy the movie, it really depends whether you mind subtitles, incredibly long (and somewhat slow) movie. But, since you like classic movies like I do and the Magnificent Seven, which also one of my favorites, I believe you would enjoy the movie. Seeing who all the Magnificent Seven characters were based off of was very interesting and I actually found Seven Samurai to be a little better than Mag 7, although I have become a fan of Samurai movies.

Nope, I don't mind subtitles OR slow-building movies. I will have to bump it up on my list. Thanks for the answer!
DeleteGreat list, curious to see what your top 5 is.
ReplyDeleteThanks Daniel, the Top 5 should be coming soon.

Nice list! Of the battles you mentioned up there I've only seen Thor's battle with the Frost Giants, which I think is totally epic and awesome. :) Oh, I've seen the battle from The Dark Knight too, I'm not as big a Batman fan though; but I've only seen The Dark Knight Rises anyway, and skipping the first two (or is it three?) movies probably isn't the best.
ReplyDeleteThank you S! While I think those Nolan Batman movies are highly overrated, I would recommend seeing them sometime because they are solid movies, and yes, Rises is the third Batman movie. :)
