Year in Review: 2014

2014 was one amazing year for geeks! From Guardians of the Galaxy to Sherlock's long awaited return, 2014 has had something for geeks of almost every fandom! Yet, at the same time, it has been a year that has seen several of our favorite franchises end... Today's post is going to take a look back at the highlights of 2014, and yes, I realize that this post is really late.

Marvel Domination
Without a doubt, Marvel dominated the year in movies! Starting in April, Marvel really hit a homerun with Captain America: The Winter Soldier being possibly the most thematically profound comic book film to date. Next came The Amazing Spider-Man 2, while flawed, was a fun movie that captured the spirit of the comic book, although now we know these movies do not matter anymore. In May, X-Men: Days of Future Past provided us with an exceptional time-travel story that brought the X-Men franchise to its former glory. Guardians of the Galaxy crushed the domestic box office, and even Big Hero 6 received high critical praise and a moderate box office haul.

End of Middle-Earth
Unless The Silmarillion is ever adapted into film, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is the last journey into Middle Earth that we will experience on film, at least until some idiots reboot the franchise. Sure, not that many people loved the final chapter, but it certainly delivered on the emotion.

A New Doctor
2015 ushered in the first season with a new Doctor Peter Capaldi. Season 8 had its ups and downs with "Kill the Moon" being one of the worst episodes of Doctor Who since the 2005 reboot, yet we were also treated to the amazingly atmospheric "Flatline." As a whole, it was a solid season of Doctor Who that makes me excited for the next one later this year!

Hooked on a Feeling
Even though Guardians was mentioned in the Marvel Domination, it deserves special mention by getting the entire country "Hooked on a Feeling!" With Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel has proven that they can adapt even the most obscure source material and have outstanding results in both quality and box office success.

Arrow and The Flash
Despite DC's failure to make quality live-action films, they do success in area, their TV series on the CW, Arrow and The Flash. Thanks to Netflix, I was able to catch up on Arrow's first two seasons, and then start watching the recent third season along with The Flash. Both series, while not perfect, are incredibly fun and showcase that not all DC properties have to feature dull, lifeless, and emo protagonists with comical amounts of over-seriousness.

Parks and Recreation
After watching Guardians of the Galaxy, I felt the need for more Chris Pratt and to satisfy this craving, I discovered Parks and Recreation, a hilarious comedy from the creators of the Office about the Parks and Rec department in the small town named Pawnee. From the lovable characters to the wide variety of humor, Parks and Rec quickly became my favorite comedy series. Unfortunately, earlier this year, the final season finished airing, and while it had a fantastic conclusion, it is still sad to see it go.

The Godfather
Finally, after years of hearing that the Godfather is quote: "The Best Movie of All-Time," I got to see it for myself. As you may know from my review, which you can read here, the first Godfather was a great film, definitely not the best movie ever by any means, but it was good enough to place on my Top 100 Movies List.

Avatar/Korra Franchise Ends
During the fall of last year, I watched the entire Avatar series and caught up to what was currently airing of the Legend of Korra. Of course, as soon as I started watching, Korra aired its final season. While the final season was not all that consistent, the finale was mostly excellent. With that said, as a whole, the Avatar/Korra franchise is one of my favorites from American television. If you want to know more, you can read my reviews of each season, as well as reviews for every episode of Korra's last season.

Three 10 out of 10s
2014 might just be the best year ever in movies, or at least if you are a geek, because we had three films, all of which based on comic books, that completely blew my mind enough to warrant 10 out of 10. Unlike some, 10/10 is not a score that I give out often. In fact, until 2014, there were only eight films deserving of such a score. Of course, the three films that far exceeded expectations were: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Guardians of the Galaxy. However, you are going to make to wait until my J and J Movie Awards before you see which of the three ranks the highest.

What are some of your highlights from 2014? Please comment below and let me know.

Looking Ahead: 2015

While 2014 was a spectacular year for geeks of all kinds, 2015 is setting up to even top last year with several top movies and final seasons of favorite television shows.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens
It is no secret that the Star Wars franchise is my all-time favorite work of fiction, particularly the Original Trilogy, and nothing is more exciting than more Star Wars to watch in the cinemas. While many are skeptical, I am remaining optimistic for several reasons. For one, Disney has turned Marvel into an even more impressive franchise than I could have ever hoped for. From the Avengers to the Winter Soldier, Disney and Marvel are crafting cinematic classics, and I believe that they can do the same with Star Wars. Secondly, J.J. Abrams is a fan of Star Wars, and just like how Peter Jackson turned the Lord of the Rings novels into three of the best films ever, I have confidence in Abrams' abilities, along with the writers. Lastly, everything that has been released about the film, except for the lack of connection with the EU, is amazing and exactly what I want to hear.

Avengers: Age of Ultron
Joss Whedon returns to director Avengers film and since Whedon has yet to disappoint us yet, is there any reason for Age of Ultron not to be the best film of the summer? Seriously, the Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy were incredible, and now Whedon will hopefully even surpass the original Avengers.

Marvel on Netflix
Marvel is not just delivering on the big screen, but also on Netflix. Even though it is unfortunate for non-Netflix subscribers that the series are not airing on television, hopefully Netflix will produce some exceptional small screen miniseries with Daredevil and Jessica Jones coming later this year. In addition to that is the currently airing Agent Carter, which is fantastic so far.

Various New Movies
As you will hear in the (hopefully) upcoming live-stream about the year's top films, aside from the two listed above, there are still several new movies that I am excited to see!

Anime Sequels
Including the currently airing sequels, Aldnoah.Zero 2, Durarara!!x2 Shou, JoJo's Bizarre Adventures: Stardust Crusaders 2, and Kuroko no Basket 3, 2015 is set to feature several more sequels that I am hyped for! From Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works 2nd Season to Knights of Sidonia, there is going to be plenty of new anime that I cannot wait to see. Unfortunately, we will have to wait another year for Attack on Titan season two though.

Doctor Who Season 9
As revealed in the Christmas special, The Doctor and Clara return for another season! Hopefully, season nine will have worked out the issues that season eight had and feature more of the brilliant chemistry between Clara and Twelve.

Parks and Recreation's Final Season
After watching Guardians of the Galaxy, I was hooked on a feeling and I was high on believing that I needed more Chris Pratt and to satisfy that feeling (yeah, bad joke but I couldn't resist!), I discovered Parks and Recreation, a hilarious comedy, co-starring Chris Pratt, from the creators of the Office about the Parks and Rec department in the small town named Pawnee. From the lovable characters to the wide variety of humor, Parks and Rec quickly became my favorite comedy series. Even though I am dreading the upcoming series finale, it has been an amazing ride thus far, and I doubt it will disappoint.

Broadchurch Season 2
Earlier this month, I watched season one of Broadchurch on Netflix and suffice to say, it was brilliant, for the most part anyway. Apparently, the series is already airing in the UK, but the US will not get it until March 4th. Obviously, I am excited to see where the series goes next, and maybe, I will write a review for the first season soon.

What are you looking forward to in 2015? Please comment below and let me know.

New Year's Blogging Resolutions

Happy New Year everyone! While many of you might be making New Year's resolutions like working out more, or whatever normal people that actually have a life do, I have been making some New Year's resolutions about Blogging, and what I plan for J and J Productions in the future. Below I have different topics and then I elaborate on them.

Return of the Podcast: Last year I made a few podcast episodes with some of my cyber-friends/collaborators, and even though the podcasts were an epic fail in terms of success on the blog, they were so much fun to make that I have to make more! Unfortunately, I doubt that I will be able to bring back the podcast until my summer break after the spring semester since I will not be taking summer class. My plan for the podcast is to be more focused on a certain topic like anime, The Walking Dead, Sherlock, etc, and it will feature more than one guest if possible. Also, they will hopefully be shorter, and therefore easier to make and listen to. Below are the links to my previous podcasts if you want to listen to them.
Podcast #3

Post Everyday: My number one goal of last year was to continue posting day, and despite college taking up the majority of my time, I not only managed to post everyday, my posts were higher in quality (hopefully that is what you think as well) and had more variety. I believe I only missed one day all year, and that was when I was in the hospital because of an unexpected illness. God willing, I will be able to continue to post everyday through 2014.

More Video Game Reviews: When I am not doing college, writing for the blog, or watching movies/TV, I am most likely playing a video game, and since playing video games is something that I enjoy doing, I plan to have a few more reviews of various games. Unfortunately, not that many of you are actually interested in video games, but I still plan to post some. My upcoming reviews include Mass Effect 2 and 3, Star Wars: KOTOR, and the Batman: Arkham trilogy.

Actually Finish Lists: Before the end of the year, I started a list of my favorite television shows and Top 10 Movie Battle scenes, and neither has been posted. That is mostly because both lists have had some drastic changes, especially the TV Shows list because I have a lot of great TV since starting the list. Also, my Top 100 Movies list needs a major overhaul.

More Anime Reviews: Anime is another somewhat unpopular topic on J and J Productions since it is such a niche fandom. Despite this, I became a fan of several shows and films over the course of last year and I plan to continue watching even more next year. Since anime series are short, I will hopefully have reviews of movies as well as series throughout the year. Maybe I will post one every other week for the few Otakus that are interested in reading them. However, if more people are interested, I will surely post even more.

Seeing More Movies in Theaters: This was one of my goals last year and I actually managed to accomplish it! Over the course of last year, I went to see seven movies in the theater, and while that does not sound like a lot by most people's standards, it was a lot for me considering my low amount of money.

Continue Commenting: Despite college, I have been able to continue to comment on other blogs, or at least I try my best. Basically, I will comment on most blogs that I follow that post about something that I am interested in. Also I need to try to spot mentioning anime on blogs that do not care anything about the topic because I notice way too many similarities between anime and modern movies now.

Watch The Godfather and Other "Classics": Yes, I have yet to see the Godfather, but I plan to watch the first two films. However, I did manage to watch other "classics" such as Citizen Kane, the Shawshank Redemption, and 2001: A Space Odyssey which I will post my reviews for at some point.

Do you have any blogging resolutions for the year? Please comment below and let me know what you think of mine.

Also I forgot to give a shout out in my 1000th post to the guest authors that helped J and J Productions reach that number. Thanks Jamie, Jordan, JT, Rebecca, and Shena Tokala for the guests posts!

Now I leave you with a humorous panel from my friend's favorite comic strip.
