Movie Music and More #50: "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1982)

I (Hamlette) am here today to discuss one of the coolest soundtracks ever.  Ever.  It's one of those soundtracks that is delicious to listen to by itself, but when paired with its movie, it's just sublime.  I am, of course, talking about John Williams' insta-classic score for Raiders of the Lost Ark (1982).

The first track I'll share with you is "A Thought for Marion/To Nepal."  I love how expectant it is, beginning with some soft, sweet ponderings, then a little mystery creeping in.  And from there, a jolt of excitement, that wonderfully playful Indy theme popping in for a moment.  Then it finishes up with a little Oriental flourish to bring in the idea we're going somewhere Foreign and Exotic. So cool!

My next selection is "The Basket Game," which balances playful and fearful so niftily.  We're worried cuz Marion gets chased and then abducted, but there's a lot of comedy going on during the chase scene too, so the whole song feels like juggling, doesn't it?

This might be my favorite moment in the whole movie -- when Indy's in the Map Room and the medallion on top of the staff actually shows him the location of the Ark.  "The Map Room: Dawn" perfectly captures Indy's expressions there, going from hopeful to awestruck.

"Washington Ending & Raiders March" starts off all sentimental.  Indiana Jones has lost his prize.  But he's got Marion still, so that's something.  The song doesn't waste too much time on his annoyance -- he gets one minute to grouse, and then here comes the most glorious theme song in action movie history (IMHO).  Really, the Raiders March feels to me like eating a giant Snickers bar while riding on a roller coaster with my best friend -- like being surrounded with joy, in other words.  I'm sitting here with a big, goofy grin on my face, bobbing my head along with it as I type, and fully intending to hit "replay" as soon as it ends.  How about you?

That's all I've got for you today, but if you want to listen to more, the entire album is available on YouTube here.

Indiana Jones 5 is Officially Announced! Ford and Spielberg Return!

Indiana Jones 5 is Officially Announced! Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg will return and the film opens on July 19th, 2019. Wow, this is exciting news! Of course, Walt Disney Studios now own the rights to Indiana Jones in the deal for Lucasfilm, and honestly, the fact that the new film is neither a reboot is surprising. Even more surprising is that Spielberg is returning to direct. In the past, he indicated that he was finished with action adventure flicks after Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but hey, Disney probably waved a wad of cash in his face and a lot of creative freedom, so he is back!

If you are somehow unaware, the Indiana Jones franchise is one of my all-time favorites, right behind Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings. However, due to Kingdom of the Crystal Skull being the most disappointing film in cinematic history, or at least from my perspective, I used to think that leaving the Indiana Jones franchise finished was the best idea. Now, with The Force Awakens bringing back Star Wars to its former glory, my faith and confidence in Disney to do the same for Indiana Jones is rather high. Spielberg is one of the greatest film directors of all-time, and some of his best work lies within the Indiana Jones trilogy, particularly Raiders of the Lost Ark. Considering The Force Awakens’ return to practical effects, it should be no question that Indiana Jones does the same with practical stun work. My only concern is that Ford is 73, and who knows how long he can keep being an action hero. Hopefully, he can give Indiana Jones a strong sendoff and pass the torch to the next generation, much like he did in The Force Awakens.

Other information released is that Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall will produce the film, and David Koepp, who has worked on Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Mission: Impossible, and Spider-Man, will write the script.

Harrison Ford Returns for Blade Runner 2

The upcoming Blade Runner sequel is greenlit with Harrison Ford returning to play Rick Deckard and Denis Villeneuve set to direct. Well, we are getting another Blade Runner movie.... Yeah, honestly, I am really skeptical about this. The original Blade Runner is one of my favorite sci-fi films ever to, and it is the type of film that does not need a sequel! Well, at least a sequel with Ford returning is so much better than a remake. Unfortunately, Ridley Scott is not returning to direct, although French director, Denis Villeneuve's film Incendies, was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, so maybe he can deliver a quality Blade Runner film. According to reports, Blade Runner 2 is set "several decades" after the original film, and filming will start next year. Considering the ambiguous ending of the original film, maybe it will expand on the possibilities and provide a definitive answer. Also, Harrison Ford coming back gives me more faith in the sequel, although Ford returned for a fourth Indiana Jones and we all know how that turned out.... Regardless, Blade Runner 2 is a sequel that no really wants. Of course, we could all be surprised, but we will just have to wait and see. Please let me know what you think in the comments below! On a side note, for any Blade Runner fans reading this, I highly recommend the series Ergo Proxy, a similarly dark cyberpunk story with well written characters and a plot that you keep you thinking for days after you watch it.

Doctor Who Actor in Star Wars

Christina Chong has been cast in a small role in Star Wars: Episode VII. She is best known for a minor role in the Doctor Who episode "A Good Man Goes to War," 24: Live Another Day, and playing Dr Sarah Witney in the TV series Monroe (haven't heard of it before). She is also the female lead of the upcoming Halo: Nightfall TV series. Movie news has been slow recently, so that is about all for today. Sorry everyone if I have not replied to comments lately. If you remember, my arm injury is preventing me from typing very much, or at all some days. Fortunately, I have had enough reviews and other posts for to post during my absence.

Star Wars Ep. 7 Delayed?

Star Wars Episode 7 is reported to be delayed past its set December 2015 release date! A couple of weeks ago Harrison Ford was reported to have injured his ankle. Later reports stated that Ford actually broken leg his leg! Since Han Solo is said to play an important role in the film, Harrison Ford's injury could end up delaying the entire film! Wow, this is terrible news. While nothing is official, according to an article from IGN.com, Ford's recovery could take up to six months! Disney is reportedly adamant about the December release date and writing Ford out of the script is, thankfully, not going to happen. Maybe this delay is going to Force Episode 7 to be released in Star Wars’ usual summer season. Hopefully, Abrams and company will be able to get everything worked without affecting the quality of the film and Ford's health. What are your thoughts on the possible Star Wars delay? Please comment below and let me know.

New Expendables 3 Trailer

A new trailer for The Expendables 3 is here, and it still looks like it is going to be a blast! Even though Harrison Ford is not going to have a large role in the movie, finally seeing the best action hero of all-time in a movie with the rest of the top action movies stars like Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson, and Arnold Schwarzenegger is going to be a lot of fun. Maybe when the movie comes out I should make a Top 25 Action Movie list. Anyway, as for the trailer itself, it looks like a lot of fun! The Expendables 2 was a lot of fun, largely thanks to the meta-humor and great cast; however, the movie took itself a little too seriously, so I hope that the third entry does not. Honestly, who watches the Expendables for the plot? The use of the whistle theme from The Bridge on the River Kwai was, again, a nice touch. Overall, fun trailer, which will hopefully result in a fun movie. What do you think? Please comment below and let me know.

Star Wars Casts Nyong'o and Christie

For those disappointed with the lack ladies in the new Star Wars cast, your request has been answers with Lupita Nyong'o and Gwendoline Christie being added to the cast.

Gwendoline Christie
Gwendoline Christie is notable for her role of Brienne of Tarth in Games of Thrones. She will also be playing Commander Lyme in the upcoming Hunger Games: Mockingjay. Having not seen her in any roles myself, I cannot say whether or not she is a good actress. However, from what I have read and what others have said, she should be able to handle an action type role. Maybe she will play a villain of some kind like a Dark Jedi or a bounty hunter.

Lupita Nyong'o
Lupita Nyong'o is another actress that I have yet to see in a role. Considering that she won an Oscar for Twelve Years a Slave, I have no doubt that she can act. She also played a small role in Non-Stop. My initial reaction is that she is a great choice for almost any role, because having an Oscar winning actress in your cast is never a bad thing.

Overall, I like both casting choices. Again, this Star Wars movie is not going with top-tier stars or ones that are more looks than talent, which is great. So far, so good with Episode VII. Now, we have a talented cast, practical effects, and an excellent director, but, most importantly, the script needs to be great, and we will not know how good that is going to be until we see the movie. What do you think of these casting choices? Please comment below and let me know.

Star Wars Set Photos Leaked

Over the past week, there has been a ton of exciting Star Wars set photos leaked! The most exciting set photo is the Millennium Falcon, which you can see below, as well as a lot of photos from the Abu Dhabi set. Obviously, the scenes filmed in Abu Dhabi are going to be Tatooine in the film. Also, there is one of an X-Wing and a large creature.

If Abrams and company are using practical effects and puppetry for a creature that large, we might be in for a real old school treat!

In response to the numerous set photos that have been leaked, Abrams Tweeted the following picture.
If you cannot read the note, here is what it says: "I wish people would stop leaking photos from Episode VII. And making ridiculous claims that the Millennium Falcon is in the movie." Of course Abrams has a good sense of humor. Fortunately, the sets pictures have not spoiled anything important, but rather have risen my expectations even more that Episode VII could be the generation defining film that the Original Trilogy was. What do you think of these set pictures? Please comment below and check back later for more Episode VII news.

Star Wars Standalone Director Chosen

The director for the upcoming Star Wars standalone feature has now been chosen, and it is Godzilla director, Gareth Edwards. Also, the release date is set to be December 16, 2016, and Gary Whitta is signed on to write the script. My initial reaction is skepticism with a touch of optimism. Providing the new standalone is not about a young Han Solo or Yoda, I am mostly OK with the standalone films considering how well Disney has handled the Marvel movies. Right now, a Boba Fett movie set not long after Episode VI would be great, because no, Boba did not die in the Sarlacc Pit, or even a movie set sometime in-between the other movies with him being a bada** bounty hunter anti-hero. However, my preferred standalone film would be an Old Republic one. As for the talent behind it, Edwards seems to be an odd choice. While I have no intention of seeing the recent Godzilla in theaters, the general opinion is that it is good, but not great, and the human story is serviceable for a monster movie, but still clichéd. Star Wars is a very character driven franchise, and getting the characters right is the most important and I am not sure if he can do it. On the other hand, the Russo Brothers, who have only directed comedy beforehand, directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and it turned out to be one of the best movies ever, so a director’s background is not necessarily the most important thing. Screenwriter Gary Whitta is another odd choice considering that he has written the critically panned After Earth and the forgettable Book of Eli. On the positive side, he has written for the Walking Dead video game and the TV series, and considering how effective the video game and TV series can be at creating characters that the audience can connect with, maybe he is the right choice. Another interesting part of the announcement is the December release date. With Disney dominating the summers with the stellar Marvel movies, maybe they are trying to take over the Christmas season with the Hobbit coming to a close later this year. What do you think of this? Please comment below and let me know, and please check back Monday for the beginning of my Top 100 Movies of All-Time list.

Star Wars Ep. 7: First Behind the Scenes Look!

J.J. Abrams gives us our first look behind the scenes look at the set of Star Wars Ep. 7, and it introduces a new alien creature. What makes me ecstatic is that there is an actual set with puppets and physical set pieces! Hallelujah! Obviously, Abrams knows exactly what we want to see with that fun creature walking up behind him. For one, I love that creature! It is very Jim Henson like. But, if Lucas was still making these, he would be standing in front of a greenscreen and that creature would be made on a computer. Considering all of the backlash for the CGI heavy prequels, I expected real sets, and I doubt Abrams is going to disappoint. Hopefully the majority of the film uses physical sets. Of course there will be plenty of CGI, but whatever you can use practical effects, you should use practical effects. While not a lot of the set is seen, it is obviously Tatooine, and it definitely reminds me of the classic feel, which is going to be the most difficult aspect of these new films to capture. In terms of marketing, the executives at Disney seem to know what they are doing and what the fans want to see. Unlike DC, who are like a baby crying for attention, Ep. 7 is slowing giving us something to get excited about and then, I assume, a trailer is going to be released, and it will hopefully blow our minds. Also, Abrams talks about how fans like us can win a chance to be included in the film as a part of a charity project. What do you think of our first glimpse at the new Star Wars set? Please comment below and let me know.

Star Wars Ep. 7 Newcomer Breakdown

Well, yesterday's breaking news that announced the new cast for Star Wars: Episode 7 finally gave us Star Wars fanatics something to get excited about, and the cast is positively fantastic! From all of the original cast returning, to fan favorite Andy Serkis, to unknowns Daisy Ridley and Domhnall Gleeson, everything about the cast is beyond exciting. In many ways, this cast has a very classic feel, which is enforced by the official black and white picture that was released. Today I will be detailing each of the newcomers to Episode 7 with my thoughts on what role they could be playing. Also, the screenwriters behind the film have a strong track record, so I am confident.

Andy Serkis
Andy Serkis is widely known for his motion-capture roles such as Sméagol/Gollum in the Middle Earth films as well as Caesar in the Rise of the Planet of the Apes. He has also played several live-action roles. Among the entire new cast, Serkis' casting is the one that I had me literally jumping up and down in my seat because he is one of my favorite actors in the business today! As a massive fan of The Lord of Rings and other Middle Earth works, having Serkis play a role in the new Star Wars films is incredibly exciting! Even though some say that he might play a live-action role, he really needs to work to his strength in a computer-generated motion-capture role. Casting Serkis in a CGI alien role almost guarantees the validity of having a CGI character so that we will never again have another Jar Jar Binks fiasco.

John Boyega
Boyeaga is a 22 year old British actor whose only notable role to date was in the film Attack the Block. While I have not seen Attack the Block, Boyega has become a hot commodity in the casting buzz as he has been rumored to play various roles from Cyborg in Justice League to the Black Panther in the Marvel-verse. My initial impression is that casting him in a possible lead role is a good idea. My guess is that he will either be playing a young Jedi, a brash young soldier in the Rebel Alliance, or even the son of Lando, any of which could be cool.

Daisy Ridley
Daisy Ridley is the true wildcard here considering that she has only done a few TV series, Blue Season, Scrawl, and Youngers, none of which I have heard of before. From what I know, she is British and is around 20 years old (have not been able to confirm an age). Rumors suggest that she might be playing the daughter of Han and Leia Solo, which, if they are inspired by the EU, would be Jaina Solo. In fact, she actually looks kind of like Jaina. Other rumors suggest that she might be the lead of the entire trilogy, which I am not all that sure about since she is such a newcomer. However, Carrie Fisher was just as unknown when she was cast as Leia, so we shall see.

Adam Driver
Driver is 30 years old and American; he is currently notable for playing a role in HBO's Girls and last year's critically acclaimed Inside Llewyn Davis. Driver was previously rumored to be playing Dick Grayson, aka Robin, aka Nightwing, in the upcoming "Man of Steel: Bring Snyder Back is a Terrible Idea," and that is undoubtedly not going to happen. Currently, the rumor has it that Driver is going to play a villain. My hope is that he is going to be an alien of some kind, preferably a Sith, as in the species, because his voice is cool.

Oscar Isaac
Another actor from Inside Llewyn Davis, Oscar Isaac was born in Guatemala to a Guatemalan mother and a Cuban father, but he was raised in Miami, and he is 35 years old. Isaac was nominated by various awards for best actor for his role, and while I have only seen him in small roles in movies such as The Nativity Story and Robin Hood (2010), he is one of my favorite choices thus far. He seems like a great fit for the new film considering his acting prowess, yet still being a relative unknown for many viewers, myself included. In a way, I hope he plays a leading part in the film as one of the main heroes, maybe even the Han Solo type character.

Domhnall Gleeson
Domhnall Gleeson is yet another inspired choice by Abrams and company. He is most notable for playing Bill Weasley, the eldest Weasley sibling, in the Harry Potter franchise in the last two films. Gleeson is 30 years old and Irish. Considering how low on the list he was named, my guess is that he does not play a large role in the film, but he seems to be a great choice nonetheless. The first thing that comes to mind is that he looks like Obi-Wan, which could bring validity to rumor that one of his kids will be featured in the film and I am not sure what to think of that.

Max von Sydow
Oscar nominated Max von Sydow is the veteran of the cast at the age of 85. He has been featured in movies such as The Exorcist, Flash Gordon, Three Days of the Condor, and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. While I have not seen him in any leading roles, von Sydow will undoubtedly bring the needed gravitas to whatever his role entails. My guess is that he will either be playing an elderly Jedi master (Joruus C'baoth maybe?) or an ancient Sith Lord.

As a whole, these new casting choices are bold, rather than safe, which is exciting to see. Disney and Abrams could have went with some well known actors and "pretty faces," but quality definitely seems to be first and foremost. What do you think of the casting choices? Please let me know in the comments.

Star Wars Episode VII Cast Announced!

After an absurdly long wait, the cast for Star Wars: Episode VII has been revealed, and it does not disappoint! First off, the long rumored original cast of Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), and Kenny Baker (R2D2) are returning to reprise their roles, all of which are fantastic to see return. As for new faces, Lord of the Rings veteran Andy Serkis will be playing a role in the film, and as a massive fan of his work as Gollum and other roles, I am beyond excited to see him cast in the film. One would expect him to play a computer generated motion-capture character, and maybe he will also play a live-action role considering that he is an all around great actor. If you remember, in a post a while back about the rumored "Seven Jedi" film, I suggested that Andy Serkis should play a role in a Star Wars film, and it turns out that I was right! The cast members include, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow. My first impression of the cast is that I am glad to see relative newcomers and unknowns in the various roles, opposed to big name actors. The original Star Wars films had a lot of newcomers, and the Marvel films have had similar success with their casting. On a side note, my biggest disappointment with the new film is that the EU is said to be skipped over, which is a topic that will take another poster entirely to discuss.
Daisy Ridley is the least known of the group having only done a few minor TV roles. On the other hand, Max von Sydow offers a veteran presence to the cast, without being too big of a name. Harry Potter fans will recognize Domhnall Gleeson for his role as Bill Weasley, and both Isaac and Driver are notable for last year's critically acclaimed Inside Llewyn Davis. No announcement on who these actors will be playing, but my thoughts on each cast member will be coming tomorrow. My overall thoughts on the casting is that they are all inspired choices that appear to be focused on quality rather than getting the big names, which is exactly what Disney and Abrams should be doing. In fact, my entire outlook about Episode VII and the future of Star Wars is now much more positive than it was in the past.

What do you think of this breaking news? Are you satisfied with the cast? Please let me know in the comments and please check back tomorrow my breakdown of the new cast with details about their past works and my speculations about what role they will be playing.
This is the official picture from the script reading.

Expendables 3 Trailer Review

Another new trailer for The Expendables 3 has been released with actual footage of all the actors this time, and it has one heck of a cast. Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and a ton of others are all here, and the movie looks like it is going to be a lot of fun like the second Expendables. My first impression of the trailer is that budget is higher and the look of the movie is a little more modern and polished. Unfortunately, Chuck Norris and Bruce Willis will not be returning but anytime you replace someone with Harrison Ford, it is a win-win situation. My second impression of the is that the movie is basically saying "Look at all the big name actors, go watch the movie!" The clips of all the actors look a little odd; almost more like a fan edit trailer than an official release. But other than that, it looks like the movie is going to be dumb fun. Hopefully the movie will not try and take itself too seriously like the last two Expendables movies (not as much a problem for the second one). Also, the trailers says"For one last ride," which means this is the last Expendables I suppose. An Expendabelles movie is in the works, which is about the female version of The Expendables. All I have to say about that movie is that Sigourney Weaver and Carrie-Anne Moss need to be in that movie. What are your thoughts on the Expendables 3 trailer? Please comment below and let me know. Also, please check back tomorrow or the next day for my review of The Expendables 2.

Ender's Game Review

Ender's Game, the 2013 film that is based on the iconic novel of the same name staring Harrison Ford and Asa Butterfield. The film is about Ender Wiggin, a promising young cadet that is rising through the ranks of the Battle Game school. In the year 2086 alien creatures known as the Formic attacked earth and slaughter millions, and the film takes place 50 years after the human race defeated the Formic and now humanity is preparing the next generation of soldiers by using kids.
One problem from the beginning is that the movie did not provide ample reasoning as to why kids are being used to control the fate of the human race. Other than line saying something about kids' minds are faster and that they know technology better or something like that, there is very littler explanation as to why children are humanity's only hope. Most likely, it was explained in the novel. Being that Ender's Game is based on a novel that a lot of people have a read, the movie adaptation occasionally suffers from some problems that adaptations usually have: a reliance on the fact that the audience knows the source material. While not always prevalent, there are aspects that feel as though there was a lot more behind it that those who have read the book can fill in the blanks. Some aspects of the story are skimmed over without much explanation. Even though the lack of explanation was a minor problem, Ender's Game biggest issue is that there is a general lack of suspense and intensity that most other good films have. Since those that have read the book already know how everything turns out, this is not a problem for those viewers, for the rest of us however, you feel that the story is a little predictable and that the final outcome is entirely expected, even if the ending is fantastic and mostly unexpected.

Directed by: Gavin Hood
Genre: Sci-Fi,
Release Date: November 1, 2013
Running Time: 114 minutes
MMPA rating: PG-13

The Good: The Battle Room scenes are cool, Harrison Ford is a excellent as always, Fantastic ending, Mostly non-annoying child/teen actors, Intriguing science-fiction world,

The Bad: Lack of suspense and intensity, Please explain why are kids controlling the fate of the humanity again?,

Plot: The following plot summary is copied from Wikipedia.com.
In the year 2086, an alien species called the Formics attacks Earth. Mazer Rackham, commander of a small reserve patrol force, halts their advance and apparently sacrifices himself during their attack.
Fifty years later, a young cadet named Andrew "Ender" Wiggin beats a school bully named Stilson at a hand-held virtual game while Colonel Hyrum Graff and Major Gwen Anderson from the International Fleet watch via Ender's monitor on his neck. Ender is summoned to have the monitor on the back of his neck removed. When Stilson and his gang attack him, Ender retaliates and violently beats Stilson. Ender returns home and confesses grief over his actions to his sister Valentine. Their older brother Peter interrupts them and convinces Ender to play a game. He then begins choking Ender, threatening to kill him but pulls back. Graff and Anderson visit the Wiggin family and offer Ender a place in Battle School, admitting that the final test was to see how Ender would react to his monitor's removal. Graff talks privately with Ender and is able to convince him to accept, because Ender believes that "it was what he was born for".
Watch the movie to see what happens next.

Plot: 7.2/10- Ender's Game plot and general concept are great, albeit a little reminiscent of Star Wars and Star Trek in some aspects in terms of setting. Many of the concepts about how to create a leader are explored, and while they lack sufficient time to explode them in any depth, what little is present is thought-provoking to a degree. Where Ender's Game falters is when the movie rushes past certain points in the plot. Despite feeling a little slow at times, the movie simultaneously feels rushed. Most of the movie is about Ender training to become a commander and, for the most part, it was entertaining and interesting, even if it still had a few of the problems mentioned above.

Characterization: 7.5/10- Thanks to a strong performance by Butterfield, Ender is a mostly likable and well rounded character. He actually reminded me of Shinji Ikari from Neon Genesis Evangelion, albeit not nearly as messed up in the head or as developed as Shinji of course, but it was cool to see another somewhat similar type character. Colonel Hyrum Graff, played by Harrison Ford, is given some moral complexity and he is an all around good character. Most of the other characters are forgettable side characters that lack any real development.

Action: 6.9/10- The Battle Room scenes in Ender's Game are fun and entertaining to watch. In some ways, the game reminded me of Quidditch from Harry Potter, but not in a bad way. The giant spac and simulator battles are entertaining for the most part, even if they lack suspense. As stated previously, there is little suspense or tension at any point during the movie.

Acting: 7.8/10- Harrison Ford is fantastic as always, and Butterfield continues to prove that he is one of the better young actors in the business today. Some of the young teen and child actors are usually fine considering their age; however, they do seem unnatural in a few scenes.

Special effects: 7.5/10- Some of Ender's Game special effects look great, while others look unrefined with obviously noticeable use of green screen.

Soundtrack: 7.2/10- Steve Jablonsky score is surprisingly good, with a few tracks in particular that are noticeable while watching the movie.

Humor: N/A-

Overall: 7.4/10- Overall, Ender's Game is a very good effort and a mostly entertaining one at that. While most of the flaws can be overlooked, the movie is not particularly memorable unless you have read the source material, but it was nevertheless more worth my time spent watching it.

Closing comments: As with most novel adaptations, those that have read the book will either love it because they are fans of the book, or hate because it is different than the source material. As for the rest movie watching audience, Ender's Game is a well made science fiction film that is very good, but never truly great.
