The words geek and nerd are often used interchangeably and this hilarious (and clean) rap battle of Nerd vs. Geek got me thinking about the whole geek vs. nerd debate and which one I would be considered. To me, both words mean virtually the same thing. While there are literal meanings of geek and nerd in a dictionary, those meaning are not exactly what I consider them. I usually associate geek with having a strong passion for something like Star Wars or a movies, and nerd is something I associate with smarter people who work with computers or are more knowledgeable about things. According to the video's definition of nerd and geek, I am a more geek because I am a fan of multiple franchises and movies, however I am also a nerd because I am majoring in IT (computers) and I have generally high grades in college. On the other hand, the video made geeks look more like hipsters. My definition of nerd and geek are very similar, almost synonyms, except geek is what I identify with more. Do you consider a geek or nerd? If so, which are you? Please comment below.
Below is a video discussing the topic by the creators of the rap battle.

According to these definitions, I am a geek. I mean, I can use a computer, ect, but that's as far as I go. I'm way more into the multiple franchises and movies person (you only need to look at my bedroom walls and blog to figure that out, though! I have waay too many posters!)
ReplyDeleteI shall watch the videos later, I'm actually in a rush before I go watch the dogs. :)

Yep, geek would definitely describe you best. :)

Hah, I thought geeks were the computer/tech guys and nerds were the mega-fans!
ReplyDeleteI've also seen it defined as geeks being the ones who enjoy fandoms and create things, like building TARDIS models or LEGO Millennium Falcons, and nerds being the ones who enjoy fandoms...and dorks being the ones who do neither and pretend to both ;)
Interesting, although I believe you are correct about geeks building TARDIS models and such. I agree about dorks, as well.

Rhett and Link are so awesome. My definitions are pretty much the same as theirs, (and in that case, I'm definitely a geek) but based on the chart in the GMM, you can tell they're not so easily definable. They blur together quite a bit! Still, I like the sound of geek better, so I'll claim that. :P
ReplyDeleteYes they are. I like the sound of geek better as well, even if the line between geek and nerd are not as clearly defined.

I definitely identify as a geek- I have all the qualifications to be one :D. I'm kind of a nerd, but math/science isn't my forte in intelligence(I'm smart in other areas, like literature, history, government, some sciences, etc). But I agree, I use them both interchangeably as well :). Geeks are awesome!!! :D
ReplyDeleteYes, you certainly have the qualifications for being a geek! :) Science is not my thing either, it is probably my most hated subject, but I relatively good at math and I am acing English.

While I may have a small side of geek to me, I am a huge nerd. (according to these your definitions) I love everything computer, and have been called a 'techy', so yea, even though I like movies, nerd is definitely on the larger side of the scale. :P
ReplyDeleteCool, it is always great to see another techy that loves computers! :)

Don't forget. Sometimes people who read books too much are geeks or nerds as well, speaking from experience, lol. But, being a nerd or geek is awesome. They're smart, they're the people you can go to and ask questions about anything. Plus they're nice, if Revenge of the Nerds has taught anybody anything. That movie is awesome; I highly recommend seeing it!! If you were bullied in high school. It's too true!!!
ReplyDeleteTrue, book readers can be considered geeks or nerds. Yes it is, and I am proud to be one. I have not seen the movie, but it sounds as though I should watch Revenge of the Nerds. Thanks!

I'm both. I'm a geek in that I am very much a fangirl (fanwoman?) of so many franchises. And I'm a nerd in that I got very high grades and love books. But I do use both terms pretty interchangeably.
ReplyDeleteThat is very similar to what I am, except I love computers more than books.
