Prometheus Review.

For the first part of my Alien franchise review, here is the Prometheus review, since it was the first movie in the Alien franchise I actually watched.
Thoughts: Prometheus the kind of spinoff/quasi-prequel to the popular Alien franchise, that people still cannot determine how it fits into the Alien franchise. At the time of watching Prometheus I had not seen any Alien film (unfortunately I have seen both AVP movies) and therefore did not have any expectations before hand. Because of this Prometheus was actually a surprisingly enjoyable movie. A few days later, however, my interest in Prometheus convinced me to watch both Alien and the sequels Aliens, which were even better.
Prometheus has to be the most surprisingly good movie of 2012 for me since I had no expectations upon my first viewing. It certainly has its flaws, Prometheus is an entertaining and visually stunning science fiction film nonetheless.
Prometheus is one of the few films were an R rating was actually necessary due to the graphic content in the film, opposed the pointless barrage of obscenities (it does have some) present in most R rated films today. One scene in particular almost made me squirm. The camera work, practical effects made the scene very suspenseful and almost painful to watch, which is rare considering how desensitized I am to violence.

The Good: Many practical effects, Visual spectacle, Excellent performances by Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace, One unforgettable scene that will make you squirm, Easy to follow for those new to the franchise,

The Bad: Stupid decisions made by a few characters, A few illogical plot points,




Plot: The following plot summary is copied from Wikipedia.com.
As a hovering spacecraft departs an Earth-like world, a humanoid alien drinks a dark bubbling liquid, then starts to disintegrate. The alien's remains cascade into a waterfall. His DNA triggers a biogenetic reaction.
In 2089, archaeologists Elizabeth Shaw and Charlie Holloway discover a star map in Scotland that matches others from several unconnected ancient cultures. They interpret this as an invitation from humanity's forerunners, the "Engineers". Peter Weyland, the elderly CEO of Weyland Corporation, funds an expedition to follow the map to the distant moon LV-223 aboard the scientific vessel Prometheus. The ship's crew travels in stasis while the android David monitors their voyage. Arriving in 2093, they are informed of their mission to find the Engineers. Mission director Meredith Vickers orders the crew to avoid making contact without her permission.
The Prometheus lands near a large artificial structure, which a team explores. Inside they find numerous stone cylinders, a large, monolithic statue of a humanoid head, and the decapitated corpse of a large alien, thought to be an Engineer; Shaw recovers its head. Other bodies are found, leading the crew to surmise that the species is extinct.

Plot: 7.9/10- Ridley Scott does a good job of establishing the world he created and a very of the characters are well written, even if others are just plain stupid. Probably the biggest problem with Prometheus were the few horror movie clichés of characters being there just to die and doing dumb things. Scott should be better than this by now to not resort to stupid clichés. Despite this, the movie is well structured overall. Noomi Rapace as Elizabeth Shaw was one of the few well developed character and I has completely onboard with her character when the "crap hit the fan". Also the android "David" was another great character with some interesting philosophical statements, although the film puts a little too much emphasis on the philosophy , which was never anything profound. The whole "find our creators" stuff was kind of out there but is a sci-fi movie in a fictional universe so not a big problem. Some of the other characters were undeveloped, but that was not huge problem since they important to the story in the end.


Action: 6.9/10- Prometheus is much more of a thriller than action movie, but there were a few well shot fight scenes during the film.


Acting: 7.8/10- Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender gave the best performance of the cast. But other than Idris Elba the other cast members were entirely forgettable. Charlize Theron has not been all that great this past year, her performances have been too over-the-top and fake, however she was far from terrible in Prometheus. 


Special effects: 9.7/10- Prometheus' special effects is were it shines with excellent use of practical effects and along with top notch CGI. Tons of practical effects were used, which made the film all the most engrossing.


Soundtrack: 7.0/10- Not bad, but nothing particularly memorable by any means.


Comedy: N/A-


Would I Watch This Again: Sure, there is enough to make another viewing worth while.


Overall: 8.0/10- Prometheus is a smart and thrilling science fiction film with unique visual design, despite some flaws.

Closing comments: Prometheus left me wanting a sequel and wanting to know more about the "Alien" franchise, which is a good thing in my book.

Top 10 War Movies.

Happy Independence Day everyday! Last year I made a list of best Patriotic Movies for the 4th of July, so here is an updated list of my favorite war movies, because what's more patriotic than war movies? Even though there have been a few good war movies from the past years, most of the best ones were made before the 80s, and those are my many of my favorites. To qualify in the war genre a film must take place around a war from any era, however I have decided to exclude Braveheart, Captain American: the First Avenger, and The Dark Knight Rises because they are not necessarily war films, but they would certainly rank high on the list.

At Number 10: Saving Private Ryan

The opening D-Day scene is classic, there is not little more to be said.

At Number 9: Sergeant York

My favorite Gary Cooper film and an underrated classic from the era, Sergeant York is based on the life story of Alvin York, a reluctant war hero. Classic American values at its finest, and York is an all around great character.

At Number 8: The Dirty Dozen

The Dirty Dozen basically started the now clichéd "Men on a Mission" format. Take a ragtag team of criminals on death row and send them on a suicide mission for their freedom. Despite many rip-offs and sequels, nothing tops the original Dirty Dozen.

At Number 7: Gettysburg

One of the longest films on this list, Gettysburg is an excellent telling of the bloodiest battle in American history and one of the Nation's darkest hours. Originally set to be release as a TV mini-series this over four hour long epic was edited into a theatrical released film and flopped at the box office. Gettysburg is not for those with a short attention span but will satisfy any history buff like myself with its historical accuracy.

At Number 6: Patton

Patton, based on the true story of General George S. Patton, and won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1977. George C. Scott gives a career defining and Oscar winning performance as the great General, which he no doubt deserved. Definitely one of the best biopics ever made and it actually made the subject matter entertaining were other such films often fail.

At Number 5: The Bridge on the River Kwai

The Bridge on the River Kwai is a unique World War II POW film, it deals more with the psychological side opposed to the physical, yet remains interesting enough to keep it entertaining. Alec Guinness' amazing performance was the core of the film's success, which he rightfully won as Oscar for.

At Number 4: Lawrence of Arabia

Over three hours in length and featuring some of, if not, the best cinematography from the era, Lawrence of Arabia is the definition of an film epic. There is not much else that needs to be said, basically watch the film if you are either a classic film buff or enjoy historical epics.

At Number 3: The Great Escape

The Great Escape is based on a true story of WWII POWs escaping from German prison, although do not expect a dark and realistic take on the events but more of a entertaining Hollywood flick. Many of the characters are likable from the all-star cast particularly Steve McQueen gave as Captain Virgil Hilts "The Cooler King". Who can forget his iconic motorcycle chase through the German country side.

At Number 2: Kelly's Heroes

Out of all the films on this list, Kelly's Heroes has probably been seen by the fewest people. Kelly's Heroes is an unconventional war film because it is more of a comedy, but does have some fun action scenes throughout. Donald Sutherland's character Oddball is hilarious! He really steals the show and Clint Eastwood is awesome as always as Kelly. There is some great satire in the film of Clint Eastwood's westerns and war films in general.

At Number 1: Inglourious B------

Inglourious is an unconventional choice, albeit a popular one for Quentin Tarantino fans. It is not your typical war film, Inglourious has a style all its own and is packed with well written and suspense dialogue scenes. While it is somewhat for some, I found it to be fantastic, a truly great film with a perfectly twisted sense of humor. *Major Spoiler* Inglourious is not realistic by any means, they end up killing Hitler by the end of the film, but that is what makes it so great because it is so unique, unpredictable and over-the-top. *End Spoiler*

Top 100 Movies Updated.

Since starting my list of Top 100 Movies, I have seen several films that I believe should now make the list, as well as two new blog pages for my entire list which you click on above. Below are the new additions to the list starting in with the highest ranking to the lowest on my new updated list. After two and a half years, my Top 100 Movie list is finally complete and a big thanks to everyone for commenting and making it one of my most popular post series yet.

Many of the films on my original list have changed position and others have dropped off the list. Next week I will post a complete list of Honorable Mentions. Since this list was so popular, I have another project in the works, my Top 25 Fictional TV Shows, however that may take a while just as this Top 100 Movies list did. Something else that I might start would be a Top 10 Favorite Book List.

Note: This is the first that I have gotten the comment section on the pages to actually work, or at least I believe it works, please inform me if there are any problems with it.

 

 

 

At Number 19: Serenity

Serenity is the follow-up to Joss Whedon's incredibly awesome TV series Firefly. It had almost everything that made the TV show amazing, but amped it up to theater quality production. Browncoats like myself will be waiting for that second season of Firefly, and we may never get to see it. It is a ruttin' shame that Serenity failed at the box office, although its failure paved the way for Whedon making The Avengers, so it was not a complete loose.

 

 

At Number 42: Man of Steel

Even though my initial rating was far too high a rating, I nevertheless enjoyed Man of Steel of plenty to include it this high on the list. Man of Steel may have lacked in several key areas, but it finally brought Superman back to the big screen in, more or less, epic fashion. After I watch it again I will probably enjoy it less and alter its spot on the list, however that this time, this is where I want on my list.

At Number 71: Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

During my original posting of this list I was unsure as to whether or not Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog should be considered a film, but it did not air on TV originally and it contains a standard three act narrative, therefore I consider it a film. It is an impressive feat for me to enjoy any musicals, but leave it to the great Joss Whedon, King of the Nerd, to make a musicals that even I enjoy. Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is hilarious, loaded with great songs, and ends perfectly, cannot wait for Whedon's upcoming sequel!

 

At Number 78: Wreck-It Ralph

Wreck-It Ralph is one of those rare animated films that really worked for me. The characters were likeable, there some hilarious jokes, and a ton of geeky video game references. Despite a few flaws, Wreck-It Ralph is my favorite family animated film, and should go down as a classic of the genre.

At Number 87: Alien

"In space no one can hear you scream." Although I do not believe it to be "scary" as some say, I did find it suspenseful with a unique atmosphere. Watching Prometheus before watching Alien probably made me enjoy Alien more, and because I watched Alien, I enjoyed the even more awesome sequel, Aliens. 

At Number 88: The Maltese Falcon

Did Humphrey Bogart even make bad movies after Maltese Falcon? Bogart is the best at playing the role of a detective and he is superb as Sam Spade. Although the ending does not entirely make sense, the rest of the mystery is intriguing and deserves it status as a mystery classic.

 

 

At Number 93: Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (uncut edition)

Another one of Bruce Timm's underrated animated films, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker merges Batman: the Animated Series and Batman Beyond into a high quality Batman film. Mark Hamill is fantastic as the and Kevin Conroy is the definitive voice of Batman. The original uncut edition is surprisingly dark and finally gives Mark Hamill's Joker a chance to kill people for the first time. Also, similar to Mask of the Phantasm, Return of the Joker is a surprisingly strong mystery, albeit not nearly as amazing as Mask of the Phantasm.

 

 

At Number 100: Monty Python and the Holy Grail

After reconsidering my opinion on Monty Python and the Holy Grail, I have decided that it does deserve a spot on my Top 100 as one of the best comedies. The satire is hilarious, and the Black Knight battle is pure hilarity! Monty Python and the Holy Grail is absurd, hilarious, and an all around fun movie to watch.

Firefly Review: Part 1.

Thoughts: Before Joss Whedon made The Avengers, he made the sci-fi TV series Firefly, also known as, one of the best gorram shows in the verse!
Firefly was, unfortunately, canceled after only one after one season, for reasons which will be discussed later, since then it has become a cult hit and hailed as one of the best in the sci-fi genre and rightfully so, because it is ruttin' awesome!
The show revolves around the exploits of the crew of a Firefly class spaceship named Serenity. While Captain Malcolm Reynolds is the main character, Firefly is more of a ensemble, revolving around the entire crew of the Serenity and giving each character roughly equal time and development. No one writes and directs characters better than Joss Whedon and Firefly is a shining example of his unmatched skill. Every character is perfectly cast and acted, delivering Whedon's superb dialogue flawlessly. Firefly has one of the best crew/team/group ever assembled, and because of this, the characters require a separate post their own, which I will hopefully post in the near future. It imperative, however, to emphasize that the series has some of the best and most well written ever created.
Another thing important to mention is how hilarious can be. Whedon's is often humorous and witty, making me laugh several times throughout most episode, yet it never felt out of place.
Firefly takes two of my favorite genres, sci-fi and western, and seamlessly blends them together into entirely unique experience. It is somewhat difficult to explain, but makes more sense after watching the series. At first the genre blending can be a bit jarring, after a few episodes however, it flows perfectly into a cohesive universe.
Although the series is amazing as a whole, the series starts a tad slow; it was not until after the first four or five episodes that I really started to love the show and get onboard with the characters. Also, as with everything Joss Whedon makes, the dialogue is pure awesomeness! Firefly's future world uses a lot unique words and slang that brings its universe to life. There is a distinct difference between how the Core worlds and outer rim talk, and the expressions they use. Most of the "swear" and slang words are made-up for the series like "gorram" and "rutting (or ruttin')" and the crew uses a variety of occasional Mandarin (Chinese)(not subtitled).
Now, as to the reason of the series' cancellation. From what I have read, the executives at Fox thought the series was far too expensive to make, so it was aired on Friday, a death sentence for TV shows. What really put the nail on the coffin is that the series was inexplicably aired out of order! When asked the Fox executor kind of avoided the question and never gave a real answer, other than "it would have failed regardless," which is probably bull.

Something else Firefly handled well was the romance. Usually television series get annoying with the romance it is so drawn out in a "will they, won't they" type junk, however never let the romantic tension overpower the story and it believably slow. Also there was already a married couple on the ship, Wash and Zoe, and married couples are rarely in fiction as they should be. They were believable and, it was fun to watch their banter.

The Good: Almost everything, Loveable characters, Fantastic theme song, Unique sci-fi universe, Often hilarious, Memorable quotes, Tons of excellent world building without unnecessary exposition, Great soundtrack, Original genre blending, Gets better as the series progresses, Comforting atmosphere, Perfect chemistry between the crew, Occasionally great action scenes, Joss Whedon made it, Endlessly quotable,

The Bad:


Setting: The series is set roughly 500 years in the future where everyone has left earth to colonize new worlds. Even though the series is set in the future, it is just as much a western as it is science fiction, because the newly colonized worlds often live in rudimentary houses, similar to those who first colonized the wild west in the 18th century. The Core worlds, on the other hand, live in technologically advanced cities.


Acting: 10/10- Every cast gave an excellent performance, there was not a single weak performance in the show, not even by minor characters. I will go into more detail is another a later post about the characters and actors who portrayed them.

Special effects: 8.4/10- Considering that the series is over ten years old, the effects are often better than what is on TV today. Nearly all of the sets were not computer generated and where actually real sets that looked fantastic.

Soundtrack: 10/10- The theme song written by Joss Whedon is positively brilliant, one of my favorite songs ever composed. It perfectly captured what the series is about and made me want to listen to it and not skip in every episode. As for the TV show's score, it too perfectly gives the show the right feeling that it needed. Many of the western themes worked so well, basically a perfect score for the series.

Comedy: 10/10- While not a comedy, Firefly has the some of the best and most perfectly placed humor ever, either for a TV series or film. All of the character's banter is often humorous, in Whedon's typical witty fashion. It is difficult to stress how well executed the humor is, because the writing and character mesh perfectly. There are so many times where I just burst out laughing!

Overall: 10/10- Overall Firefly is deserving of every bit of praise it receives, it is that amazing. While it is not my favorite TV, it certainly cracks the Top 3 and earns it spot among the greatest works of science fiction ever created. If it only had more season, it might have ended up the TV series of all-time. For those old enough, do yourself a favor and watch Firefly, it may start slow, but it is truly a classic that will be remembered for years to come.

Closing comments: Fox can cancel Firefly, but they "can never take the sky from me!"

My only slight problem with the series is that there was necessary amount of sexual content in some episodes, particularly: "Heart of Gold", "War Stories", and a few of the earlier episodes. Normally I do not take note of this in my reviews, but I felt it necessary to recommend the series for more mature viewers, depending upon one's opinion.

Coming Soon: July 2013

Today I would like to introduce another guest author my virtual friend and fellow film critic Jordan at RATH'S REVIEWS. After reading his July movie guide, I highly recommend following his blog RATH'S REVIEWS for some of the latest and best film reviews around. 

 

So here we are. Halfway done with the year and with the summer blockbuster season. We have seen a man learn that he is more than an iron suit, how people partied in the 1920's, what a warp speed space battle looks like, how cars, planes, and runways can defy logic and physics, how movie stars act when its the end of the world, what happens when Superman really fights, and how Brad Pitt keeps his hair looking great despite a zombie apocalypse. All in all it has been an entertaining year, although I'm not sure it has reached the dizzying heights that last summer achieved. In this series of posts, I will look at the movies coming out that you should know about and what you should know about them. Click the titles of the movies for their trailer!

Despicable Me 2 -- July 3

Why it's Worth Seeing: Don't hate me, but I have yet to see the first Despicable Me. With that being said, I have never heard a bad thing about it and it sounds like the minions are funny enough to carry a movie by themselves. The movie should focus on Steve Carell and the minions in order to achieve maximum laughs.

What Could Go Wrong: What always goes wrong with animation sequels? Hardly any of them are better than the original and it's usually because of a lack of effort and inspiration. Some examples are more drastic than others, but they are usually significantly less magical. (*begins praying that this doesn't happen to Wreck-it Ralph 2*)

The Lone Ranger -- July 3

Why it's Worth Seeing: Despite my prediction that this will be the flop of the summer, there is always a chance that Disney and Bruckheimer will capture the same awesomeness that they did with the first two Pirates movies. Remember last year's John Carter? Yeah, not many people do. But it was actually a pretty entertaining movie. The Lone Ranger doesn't suffer a terrible release date so it will most likely fare a lot better than JC did.

What Could Go Wrong: If you've seen the last couple of Pirate movies you know exactly what could go wrong. Fun? Sure. Inspired? Not in the slightest. They are forgettable movies and lack the imagination that the first couple did. With this being a new franchise, Bruckheimer could falter even more and deliver a stinker.

Grown Ups 2 -- July 12

Why it's Worth Seeing: Sandler films often get a lot of flack from "professional" critics, but there is no denying the fact that he certainly has some classic comedies on his acting resume. Despite the universal panning of Grown Ups, I heard that it was actually pretty fun and not half bad (again, I did not see the first one). Critics hate on Sandler because they can, but that doesn't always mean they are right.

What Could Go Wrong: Most of the time the critics are right. It's been a while since Sandler gave us hits like The Waterboy and Big Daddy. I think that Don't Mess with the Zohan was the last film of his that I saw in theaters. There is a reason I haven't been back since; he just isn't that funny sometimes.

Pacific Rim -- July 12

Why it's Worth Seeing: Giant monsters. Giant robots. Guillermo Del Toro directing. IMAX. Need I say more? Count this as one of my most anticipated, especially after some of the good buzz it has been getting.

What Could Go Wrong: Hopefully not much with Del Toro at the helm, but then again remember how cool cowboys fighting aliens sounded? Let's hope that Del Toro can surpass Michael Bay in the "fighting robots" movie genre but sometimes the coolest sounding movie premises fall the hardest.

Turbo -- July 17

Why it's Worth Seeing: Early previews have some strong jokes and the voice cast is pretty impressive including Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, and Samuel L. Jackson. 

What Could Go Wrong: Like most of the other animated films so far this year (with maybe the exception of Monsters University), it could be very uninspired. Kids will drag their parents to anything and parents will sit through most anything to get their kids to be quiet. Nothing about Turbo looks particularly fantastic. Call me jaded, but after how superb Wreck-it Ralph was late last year, I am pretty picky with my animated movies. 

The Conjuring -- July 19

Why it's Worth Seeing: I am not a horror fan in the slightest. I only go to a horror movie if it's getting fantastic buzz unanimously. Two of those movies were Saw and Insidious, both of which were pretty engrossing/terrifying. The director of both of those films is back with this one and he knows how to get the scares. The Conjuring could end up being the sleeper horror hit of the year.

What Could Go Wrong: Well, it's a horror movie so a whole lot. It could be funnier than it is scary, it could tell a stupid story, it could have shockingly idiotic characters...take your pick really. Messing up a horror movie is one of the easiest things to do in Hollywood. Making a classic horror movie is one of the hardest. 

R.I.P.D. -- July 19

Why it's Worth Seeing: The fact that it has Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds is certainly a strong case in and of itself. Not to mention, the trailer is pretty funny. This could be a comedy duo that no one saw coming and if the action is equally as strong audiences could be in for a real treat. 

What Could Go Wrong: I can't shake the familiar feeling of Men in Black with the trailer. Even though they come from different source material, the trailer makes it feel incredibly like that other movie series with an unexpected comedy duo. This could be a movie that you don't want to pay for, but you will enjoy it a lot once it's on TV. 

RED 2 -- July 19

Why it's Worth Seeing: The first RED was an unexpected treasure. I only saw it once, but it was a delightful viewing. It was funny, told a decent enough story, and had some cool action. Mostly everyone is back for the sequel and that makes for one really impressive cast. As long as the spirit of the first one is recaptured then RED 2 should be a fun time. 

What Could Go Wrong: They have taken their time between sequels, so hopefully not too much. That being said, it could just be a bunch of old -person jokes and no story or inventive action. 

Only God Forgives -- July 19

Why it's Worth Seeing: Rounding out the very busy July 19th weekend is Only God Forgives. The last time Ryan Gosling and director Nicolas Winding Refn got together they made one of my favorite movies of all time: Drive. It was quiet, took it's time, featured an absolutely fantastic soundtrack, and was shockingly violent. If you've never been seduced by a movie, watch Drive. If Gosling and Refn can recapture that vibe again, we could be looking at a new personal favorite.

What Could Go Wrong: Drive was mostly universally praised. Reviews for Only God Forgives are coming in fairly mixed at this point claiming that Refn essentially tried to repackage Drive and the results are less than compelling. Hopefully we avoid copycat syndrome and the critics turn out to be wrong. 

The Wolverine -- July 26

Why it's Worth Seeing: The trailer and buzz is indicating that the creators are actually getting serious with the character this time unlike X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Based on the comic book's mythology, the story being told in The Wolverine is one of the most important in the tough guy's history so hopes are high. 

What Could Go Wrong: Sometimes the X-Men are just better as a group. Between the DC and Marvel super battle going on right now, it seems like the X-Men get left in the dust recently (other than X-Men First Class). Hopefully The Wolverine changes that and makes them relevant again, but if the plot doesn't serve a higher purpose to the universe it could come across as a pointless cash grab.

So there you have it! That's what is coming to a theater near you in the month of July. Now allow me to introduce myself: I am Jordan from Rath's Reviews! On my site I review new movies, movies that have released a few years ago, and I just recently began to review videogames. James and I have become virtual friends over the last few months and like many of you, I absolutely love the content that he is putting out on a consistent basis.
